Environment and Climate Change
It is our policy to ensure, by encouraging environmental best practice in the business, that our operations have as little environmental impact as is consistent with our business needs. The effect on the environment of the Group’s activities is monitored, where appropriate, with regard to the low overall environmental impact of our primary activities as a software publisher and service provider. We work to promote environmental care, to increase our understanding of environmental issues and to spread environmental best practice throughout our businesses.
Activities undertaken by our Operating Companies to minimise environmental impact during FY 2007 include:
- Offices taking part in local furniture recycling schemes (UK, Germany)
- Cycle to Work scheme (UK)
- CR added to supply tender process (UK)
- We now follow American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air conditioning Engineers’ guidelines on maximising efficient use of building temperature management systems to minimise energy use. (North America)
- Installation of low energy light bulbs in offices to reduce energy use and motion sensor systems to ensure lights go out when no one is using the office. (North America)
- Other building improvements in offices to minimise energy waste include: installation of double glazing to reduce heat loss; installation of insulation; low energy water heaters, water conservation systems, digital water controllers to reduce consumption, low-flow plumbing systems to reduce water use (North America)
- Use of recycled materials in buildings where possible.
- Electronic manuals available to minimise print (All regions)
- Energy reduction campaign (Germany)
- Measuring energy usage and carbon emissions (UK and Spain)
We make maximum use of internet and telephone based tools to manage international meetings in order to minimise air travel where possible and our businesses have introduced policies and incentives to reduce car use.
This year we have reviewed our approach to managing our environmental impacts and during 2008 we will ask all of our businesses to measure both their carbon emissions and waste production with a view to making reductions.
