After all, you\u2019re ultimately dealing with people. They have changing priorities, desires and wishes too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The changing nature of HR was in fact the single biggest theme which emerged from our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-au\/blog\/7-ways-hr-is-changing\/#download\">recent research from 500 global HR and People leaders<\/a> on the challenges and priorities they\u2019re facing in the sector, and their roles, today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These changes aren\u2019t just day-to-day, however. HR, the workforce, and the world of work is changing. Seismic shifts in the way organisations operate, manage their people and work are occurring as a result \u2013 with huge implications for HR and People teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-about-the-research\"><strong>About the research <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our research set out to find out what these changes mean for HR and People leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We asked them how they\u2019re adapting to the changing world of work, what they\u2019re doing differently, and what\u2019s on the horizon in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, we asked them about the impact for their teams and their own professional careers: how prepared are they and their teams for the continued changes ahead?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their answers uncovered some revealing findings. HR is changing to People \u2013 but most organisations haven\u2019t fully transformed yet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as Personnel evolved into HR in the 1980s, it\u2019s now changing into a \u2018People\u2019 function. 94% of respondents echoed this by anticipating changes in the next three to five years as part of this transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, just 18% of HR leaders feel they\u2019ve made the transition from HR to People already. Most are in it for the long haul, with 86% expecting the transformation to take up to 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-over-a-third-of-hr-leaders-have-adopted-new-ways-of-working-across-the-board\"><strong>2. Over a third of HR leaders have adopted new ways of working across the board<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On average, over a third of HR and People leaders have adopted new ways of working across all areas, our research revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, seamless onboarding and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-au\/blog\/5-ways-automation-transform-hr\/\">automation<\/a> in recruitment; data-driven decision making; enhanced employee experiences; holistic wellness programs; flexible and remote working; and employee-driven learning. The research report breaks down in full, for each of these areas, how far HR and People teams are in their adoption of new ways of working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly, a huge 95% of HR and People teams are either already offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-au\/blog\/new-flexible-workplace-laws\/\">flexible working<\/a>\u2014or plan to in the next two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-employees-expectations-of-hr-are-shifting\"><strong>3. Employees\u2019 expectations of HR are shifting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changing employee expectations are also driving some of these operational changes as HR teams continue their HR to People journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A whopping 69% of respondents said they expect employees\u2019 expectations of HR to completely change in the next three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-technology-adoption-is-slow\"><strong>4. Technology adoption is slow<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our research found that top priorities for HR and People teams are cloud and mobile technology, with 43% and 36% of organisations adopting them respectively, followed by analytics (26% adopted) and self-service (24%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HR and People teams are also showing early signs of experimenting with technologies such as AI (13%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">adopted) and gamification (12%), but there\u2019s still more to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A third of HR leaders have fully automated HR \u2013\u2013with a further 28% planning to adopt this in the next two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-hr-leaders-are-concerned-organisations-won-t-be-able-to-keep-up-with-changes\"><strong>5. HR leaders are concerned organisations won\u2019t be able to keep up with changes <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worryingly, 43% of HR leaders believe their organisation won\u2019t keep up with changes in technology over the next 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, there was a striking message from respondents that, despite there being appetite for change on their side, HR and People leaders are facing barriers in their organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over half (52%) of organisations are preventing changes in HR that HR and People leaders want<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over half (53%) of HR and People teams are delaying change because they have too many competing priorities to focus on<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>57% of HR leaders told us they can\u2019t invest in new technology because of resourcing restrictions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-critical-skillsets-must-change-and-urgently\"><strong>6. Critical skillsets must change \u2013 and urgently <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surprisingly, fewer than one in three respondents we polled would rate their HR skills and competencies as expert level today, with 86% of respondents believing HR skillsets need to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HR and People leaders feel they are weak in areas such as behavioural sciences, technology knowledge, People analytics, and communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, a huge 82% of HR and People leaders anticipate that the role of HR director will be completely unrecognisable in ten years\u2019 time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-over-a-third-of-companies-plan-to-hire-non-traditional-hr-roles\"><strong>7. Over a third of companies plan to hire non-traditional HR roles<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a global skills crunch almost inevitable within the HR sector, it\u2019s no surprise that a third (34%) of respondents are planning to hire non-traditional HR roles. Over a quarter (25%) also intend to bring in external consultants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-can-hr-and-people-leaders-can-get-ahead\"><strong>How can HR and People leaders can get ahead? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-address-the-skills-gap\"><strong><em>1. Address the skills gap <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We found that while recognised, the challenge of plugging the skills gaps within HR has been vastly underestimated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Identify skills gaps in your team now, and where they could be in the future for your organisation, to get ahead in the HR to People transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-drive-agile-ways-of-working\"><strong><em>2. Drive agile ways of working <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agile ways of working mean HR and People teams can implement changes faster. They can get quicker feedback and take remedial action. By continuously re-designing better ways of working in this way, they can see a quicker impact on productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our research found that less than a third of HR leaders currently operate an agile HR model today, though. Do you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-get-ahead-with-technology\"><strong><em>3. Get ahead with technology <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology such as automation and analytics enables HR to work smarter, faster and more strategically. With 43% of HR leaders believing their organisation will not keep up with changes in technology over the next 10 years, however, there\u2019s still a lot to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-make-the-business-case\"><strong><em>4. Make the business case <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">53% of HR leaders told us they can\u2019t make the business case for change. Investing in your people is one of the most important business decisions an organisation can make. Get it right and your business will thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building a robust and comprehensive business case is the most powerful tool you can use to get that all important slice of budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ready-to-be-the-face-of-change\"><strong>Ready to be the face of change?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our research found that HR leaders believe the HR to People transformation to be real; the way HR operates is evolving; technology used in HR is changing; and, the role of HR is shifting and new skillsets are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, new applications and technology for this new world are required, to help HR leaders on their ongoing journey from HR to People.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short: everything\u2019s changing. It seems change is in fact, right now for HR, the only constant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may sound daunting or exhausting, but if any sector can not only survive amongst change, but thrive \u2013 it\u2019s HR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your role is built around change. Different days, different people. Different challenges.
