However, they\u2019ve done an extraordinary job of pulling together resources where they can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this, businesses have to recognise that they can\u2019t always rely on government support being in the right place at the right time in the case of truly \u2018black swan\u2019 events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While bigger manufacturing and logistics firms can usually see trends rapidly enough to react, they need to be proactive because supply chain efficiency is all about optimising for customer demand. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-au\/coronavirus\/\">coronavirus<\/a> caught everyone flat-footed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are five lessons for the manufacturing, logistics and warehousing industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-1-digital-powers-flexibility\">Lesson 1: Digital powers flexibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of realignment, we\u2019ve seen some extraordinary pieces of work, where large companies have changed their operations almost overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Walmart in the US to UK supermarkets such as Tesco, and of course the ever-present Amazon, the largest players have not just managed to keep the lights on, they have thrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many wholesalers in individual sectors have successfully developed direct-to-consumer offers where their retailers have shut down, again in a matter of days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers are still there. That\u2019s the key message: certainly, there is a practical issue around packaging and branding, for example. But people do still want milk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, it\u2019s true that Amazon has deeper pockets than a typical midsize manufacturer, but online shopping has been developing for the past 15 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon is certainly a pioneer, but both facing the consumer and facing back into the supply chain, digital tools are now available to simplify and optimise the supply chain across the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, a producer today faces a much lower cost to optimise their business than Amazon, which has invested for two decades to build these tools from scratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where suppliers have fallen short is that they have allowed Amazon to capture their markets \u2013 indeed that was often true even before coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many commentators suggest that the key output of the current outbreak will be a rapid deterioration in the state of retail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While that is a possibility, there is a more optimistic view: smart producers and businesses further up the supply chain will realise the value of investing in online channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means not only selling direct to consumers but also optimising upward supply chains for flexibility when dealing with manufacturers and farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"single-cta gated-content\">\n\t<div class=\"single-cta__positioner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"single-cta__wrapper has-dark-background-color\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"single-cta__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"single-cta__title h3\">eBook: Eliminate manufacturing operational pressures<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"single-cta__description\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Discover the key benefits a modern ERP solution can provide your organisation and how it can help you overcome the top 5 operational pressures facing manufacturers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a\n\t\t\t\t\t\thref=\"#gate-6af89517-3925-4bc4-b0af-9cb5e31cc667\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"single-cta__button button button--primary\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t>Download eBook<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1215\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/10\/GettyImages-1407139586-1215x810.jpg\" class=\"single-cta__image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/10\/GettyImages-1407139586-1215x810.jpg 1215w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 48em) 33vw, 100vw\" \/>\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-2-dual-sourcing-is-a-priority\">Lesson 2: Dual sourcing is a priority<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not everybody wants to become an online retailer, which brings us to dual sourcing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the greatest lesson for supply chain professionals&nbsp; is that many have focused so exclusively on leanness that it has made some blind to the importance of resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While global trade and supply chains are better for business than protectionism, supply chain experts must also keep their eyes open to the world in which they find themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The painful truth is that the coronavirus outbreak was not completely without warning to the rest of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February 2020, China used significantly less energy than the same time the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same month in the United States, the port at Long Beach in Los Angeles saw a significant reduction in the number of container vessels coming from China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were signs of trouble ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Larger businesses \u2013 and the smaller ones who partner with them, if communication was strong enough \u2013 could have noticed problems on the horizon. More importantly, they should have had a Plan B for alternative sourcing from other parts of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a post-COVID-19 world, we may see a restructured vision of commercial supply chains, with many more businesses shouldering the cost of secondary channels, rather than putting all their eggs in one basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while China has traditionally been the least-cost supplier of choice such that this outbreak really emphasises the issue, economic, geopolitical and social problems can develop anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s crucial that businesses can flex to alternative sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-3-we-are-in-a-transitional-period-the-new-normal-is-a-way-off\">Lesson 3: We are in a transitional period \u2013 the \u2018new normal\u2019 is a way off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Governments want and need the economy to return to some semblance of normality, and they will encourage businesses to work out their operational needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now, companies are wrestling with the day-to-day challenge of how to protect employees when they come into the workplace, particularly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The availability of personal protective equipment (PPE).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to organise for social distancing where people might have previously operated in close confines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to create a testing regime when tests become widely available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These can be particularly challenging in labour-intensive parts of manufacturing and logistics, from food production to warehousing and distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only then will companies be able to raise their eyes towards the long term, where there will be opportunities to work more efficiently, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Working from home for a large number of employees, many of whom (although by no means universally) are finding personal benefit in the change, too.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Omnichannel retail, which means both traditional retailers embracing digital and wholesale\/supplier organisations joining the direct-to-consumer market.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A significant restructuring of business, particularly to focus on core activities, with a shorter timeline of strategic visibility and less speculative activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-4-the-medium-term-will-be-challenging\">Lesson 4: The medium term will be challenging<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is what we may expect in the medium term:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-protectionism\">Protectionism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We may see new types of protectionism, often driven by political sentiment rather than the facts, which will shorten supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, some countries will want to protect their food sources by growing more at home. This will mean changes for logistics businesses in the medium term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fewer-people-travelling-will-mean-less-freight-too\">Fewer people travelling will mean less freight, too<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Travel will take several years to return to 2019 levels and this will also affect global supply chains. When we travel less, we do fewer deals and operate closer to home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, most people don\u2019t know that passenger planes carry plenty of cargo, too. So the inevitable reduction in passenger flights will take its toll on commercial cargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-higher-costs\">Higher costs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We also need to realise that the base costs of transportation and logistics are going to go up. That may be mitigated by new efficiencies, but again, it will mean change and disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are just a few of the effects. Every business should be re-examining its supply chain and truly understanding it because supply chains are granular and intricate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Test for vulnerabilities and understand the impact of these and other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-5-embrace-automation\">Lesson 5: Embrace automation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The prognosis had always been that we would see automation truly impact logistics by around 2030; and major players in the space have been moving down the automation, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics paths for a decade or so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, if you have a situation where people are not permitted into a workplace, that will inevitably turn minds to the value of automation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Automation ceases to be a way to shave a few percentage points off operational costs; it becomes a financial imperative, either to keep the business going, or to shore up competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And one of the big arguments against automation \u2013 that the cost of deployment is greater, at least in the short term, than paying employees \u2013 falls out of the equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many supply chain professionals may look back in a couple of years and see coronavirus as a clear stimulus for the acceleration of automation in logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add to that the rapid improvement of capability in autonomous vehicles, logistics may look different in five years, not 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"single-cta gated-content\">\n\t<div class=\"single-cta__positioner\">\n\t\t<div
