Be open and inclusive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019d be surprised at the amount of stress that is caused by a lack of communication and feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf someone comes to you to voice their concerns, listen and acknowledge their feelings, don\u2019t simply dismiss them out of hand,\u201d explains Jon Thurmond, Regional Human Resources Manager at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/teamfishel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Team Fishel<\/a>, and host of the #HRSocialHour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, remove uncertainty and tension by creating an environment where employees feel encouraged and confident to voice their questions and opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Demonstrating a \u201cgenuine desire to be more open and inclusive\u201d with your workforce will reduce stress by giving them a sense of \u201cinvolvement and control\u201d over their environment, adds Perry Timms, Founder and Chief Energy Officer at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pthr.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">People and Transformational HR<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-use-positive-language\">2. Use positive language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/affectivebrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/1-s2.0-S1364661315002788-main.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research<\/a>&nbsp;has shown that our brains take on information delivered in a positive way far better than information delivered in a negative one.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/info.totalwellnesshealth.com\/blog\/the-four-components-of-a-positive-message-infographic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Happier words<\/a>&nbsp;can lead to a more constructive culture and optimistic, motivated employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To design \u201ca positive work environment you need to create an affirming and uplifting work setting,\u201d says Dave Ulrich, Rensis Likert Professor at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, and co-founder of global professional services firm,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rbl.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RBL Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encourage your team and business leaders to use words that bring about constructive interactions. Be personal, supportive, passionate and empowering in your communication and interactions with your people. The words you choose are instrumental in generating a more positive workforce experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-provide-purpose-at-work\">3. Provide purpose at work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Insight from a study conducted by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2014\/07\/28\/334447274\/people-who-feel-they-have-a-purpose-in-life-live-longer?t=1571240525735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell University<\/a>&nbsp;suggests that having a sense of purpose may protect people against stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giving your employees control over their \u201cidentity at work\u201d and connecting their personal success to \u201cthe brand of their organisation\u201d will give them a feeling of their own significance and control over their own destiny, adds Ulrich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees whose managers involve them in goal setting are&nbsp;over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/238064\/re-engineering-performance-management.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three times more likely<\/a> than other employees to be engaged and motivated. If your people understand how their work fits into the organisation\u2019s goals, this could give them a clearer understanding of the role they play and alleviate feelings of stress.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-eliminate-blame\">4. Eliminate blame<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Examine your company culture. Are your employees taking risks, making mistakes, learning and moving on or are they so frightened of making mistakes that they are not even trying?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/221902253_A_new_perspective_on_blame_culture_An_experimental_study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">studies<\/a> on blame culture have revealed that the fear of being blamed is higher than the fear of being punished. Many employees are so worried about finger-pointing at work that they either don\u2019t try, spend a disproportionate amount of time playing it safe or find ways to cover their tracks, all of which are not healthy for them or the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remove the potential stress of blame by \u201chelping employees learn from good and bad experiences\u201d and see failure as a positive path to learn, innovate and flourish, adds Ulrich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading by example can help encourage this. Take accountability for mistakes, talk openly about failure at work and encourage your workforce to take constructive insight from errors rather than point the finger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-say-thank-you\">5. Say thank you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This one\u2019s simple but often gets missed. Be sure to celebrate recognise employees\u2019 successes. The more honest and personalised you can be in your praise, the more genuine the positive impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSmall tokens of appreciation and recognition can go a long way\u201d in keeping your people \u201cengaged when stress levels are high,\u201d explains Thurmond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/236441\/employee-recognition-low-cost-high-impact.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gallup research<\/a>&nbsp;has shown that workplace recognition motivates, provides a sense of accomplishment and makes employees feel valued for their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When was the last time you thanked a colleague for something they did for you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"single-cta gated-content\">\n\t<div class=\"single-cta__positioner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"single-cta__wrapper has-dark-background-color\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"single-cta__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"single-cta__title h3\">Free research report: The changing face of HR<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"single-cta__description\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Seismic shifts in the way organisations operate, work, and manage their people are occurring.
