However, if they lead employees to find meaning \u2013 perhaps they will<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kochiesbusinessbuilders.com.au\/gallup-report-finds-australian-employees-stressed-and-disengaged\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">71% of Australian and New Zealand workers<\/a> weren\u2019t engaged at work prior to the global pandemic, it\u2019s certainly worth a shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because employees who derive meaning and significance from their work are more than&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/06\/01\/opinion\/sunday\/why-you-hate-work.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">three times<\/a> as likely to stay with their organisations, have higher job satisfaction and engagement levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-meaningful-work\"><strong>What is meaningful work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Meaningful work is when employees truly feel that their work matters, that it has an impact on the organisation and society, and that it means something to them personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An organisation doesn\u2019t have to be a not-for-profit or social enterprise to create an environment where employees feel that their work matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meaningful work can differ for each employee. Another manager spent two days in a hospital to see the impact of going paperless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon, employees were suggesting more meaningful solutions for customers based on their on-site visits. According to Ritz, this simple practice gave employees a better sense of the real value of their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting employees away from their desks and stations is an innovative way to help them grasp the impact of their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enable them to benefit from an informed understanding of the end client by arranging meetings with real-life customers. This approach will better equip them to offer relevant solutions to clients and seeing the impact that their work has will continue to motivate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-warby-parker\"><strong>Warby Parker<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless you work for a charity, sometimes it can be difficult for employees to envisage higher meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eyewear brand&nbsp;Warby Parker&nbsp;is built on the belief that everybody has the right to see. Partnering with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/visionspring.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VisionSpring<\/a>, to create the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.warbyparker.com\/buy-a-pair-give-a-pair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Buy a Pair, Give a Pair<\/a> program, the brand is committed to helping the 15% of the world\u2019s population without access to glasses. To date, it has given 8 million pairs to those in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing good is central to the Warby Parker philosophy so they\u2019ve created an environment in which every employee is encouraged to engage with the community they help, both in and out of the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each employee is given 16 hours of paid leave a year to volunteer and to celebrate their third anniversary at the company they are taken to visit a country where Buy a Pair, Give a Pair has made a difference to see the life-changing impact of a pair of glasses up close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect work to a higher meaning by going beyond just having your vision written down on your website and company collateral and help employees to not only understand, but strive towards, your company goals collectively by embodying them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-software-company-sas-nbsp\"><strong>Software company SAS&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Empowering employees is a great galvanizer. SAS Managing Director David Bowie believes that a focus on embedding leadership into the culture at every level of business has helped create the right conditions for broader success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important way in which Bowie role models this is through a program called \u2018Connections\u2019 which helps drive leadership communication and engagement across the organisation. Part of this program empowers employees to come directly to him for \u2018coffee with David\u2019 to discuss ideas, issues or challenges at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By teaching everyone what leadership behavior is all about, you can enable them to better lead and follow when they must well to work together and reach a common goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure that all employees have an opportunity to grow, progress and to try out different roles and responsibilities. Arrange cross-departmental meetings and mentorship programs so that people understand each other\u2019s different roles and learn from each other. Allow employees to have autonomy over their projects and work streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-meaningful-work-is-more-than-just-a-program\"><strong>Meaningful work is more than just a program <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of these organisations has looked at new ways to demonstrate to employees the impact of what they do, or empowered them to see this for themselves, or affect company strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this doesn\u2019t mean that these organisations are experts at creating meaningful work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply having a program to see the impact of their work does not mean that employees feel their work is meaningful and are therefore more engaged and productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other aspects are vital to consider too. Not just meaningful work, but meaningful connections and meaningful purpose, too.
