That\u2019s vital when productivity levels globally are at their lowest ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Appreciation is also a fundamental human need. It falls under the fourth level of <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/theneurotypical.com\/maslows_basic_needs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maslow\u2019s Hierarchy of Basic Needs \u2013 \u2018self-esteem\u2019<\/a>. It is a degree of self-respect and respect from others which includes recognition, attention and appreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With engagement levels reportedly at an all-time low, building a culture of appreciation in your company is not only the right thing to do but also a smart business move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-kind-of-appreciation-do-employees-actually-want\">What kind of appreciation do employees actually want?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"mailto:%20http:\/\/news.gallup.com\/businessjournal\/193238\/employee-recognition-low-cost-high-impact.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gallup<\/a>, the most effective recognition is honest, authentic&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;individualized to how each employee wants to be recognized.&nbsp;The key is to know&nbsp;<em>what<\/em>&nbsp;makes it meaningful and memorable for the employee, and&nbsp;<em>who<\/em>&nbsp;is doing the recognizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The six types of recognition employees highlighted to Gallup as being the most memorable, were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>public recognition or acknowledgment via an award, certificate or commendation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>private recognition from a boss, peer or customer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>receiving or obtaining a high level of achievement through evaluations or reviews<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>promotion or increase in scope of work or responsibility to show trust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>monetary award such as a trip, prize or pay increase<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>personal satisfaction or pride in work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, who\u2019s going the extra mile and showing employees recognition all year-round? And how are they doing it? Here\u2019s five examples of employee appreciation at its best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-motley-fool-has-made-every-day-employee-appreciation-day\">1. Motley Fool has made every day Employee Appreciation Day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few years back, multimedia financial services firm The Motley Fool discovered that its Fools (that\u2019s what it calls its employees!) were not feeling recognized or rewarded for hard work. <a href=\"mailto:http:\/\/culture.fool.com\/2016\/03\/employee-appreciation-day-is-every-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Writing for the company blog, Erin Miller<\/a>, People Coach at The Motley Fool, says the company realized that for its people to truly feel appreciated and inspired, \u2018rewards needed to be timely and specific\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At any given moment, employees can now give \u2018virtual\u2019 shout-outs to fellow colleagues that can later be converted into prizes. Miller says the program\u2019s been a great success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-omelet-grants-employees-time-on-passion-projects\">2. Omelet grants employees time on passion projects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creative agency <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.omeletla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Omelet<\/a> has&nbsp;a program they call 60\/60, which grants employees two hours every week to&nbsp;work on a project they\u2019re passionate about \u2013 and it doesn\u2019t even have to relate to a client, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snacknation.com\/blog\/employee-recognition-ideas\/\">reports Snacknation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the program, employees have been able to work on anything from sports sites to food blogs. By recognizing and celebrating an employee\u2019s passions, they know you value them as an employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-disney-celebrate-the-everyday-and-say-thank-you-regularly\">3. Disney: celebrate the everyday and say thank you regularly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing for the company blog, Bruce Jones, senior programming director at Disney Institute <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/disneyinstitute.com\/blog\/2016\/01\/celebrate-the-everyday-and-beyond-the-value-of-consistent-recognition-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highlights the value of consistent recognition in the workplace<\/a>. He says leaders who say thanks as much as possible, and who make recognition a regular, year-round priority create an environment of genuine care, which is a powerful tool for employee engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Disney, he says they believe that leaders should engage in at least these two broad types of recognition. Firstly, sincere, every-day acknowledgement for \u2018going above and beyond\u2019 in daily tasks; and secondly, celebrating special moments and opportunities that focus on larger accomplishments and significant milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-federal-brace-uses-a-customer-quotes-board-to-recognize-employees\">4. Federal Brace uses a customer quotes board to recognize employees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Designer support brackets firm Federal Brace has seen its team grow closer since introducing a \u2018customer quotes\u2019 board, where it pins up things that customers have said when a team member has gone above and beyond to provide great customer service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/fitsmallbusiness.com\/employee-recognition-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Speaking to Fitsmallbusiness, Marketing Manager Reagan Toal<\/a> says it helps the company not only focus on an employee\u2019s specific strengths, but also motivate everyone to give our 100%. \u2018After 25 quotes are on the board, we take them down, read them as a team, and everyone gets lunch on the company tab for the great work,\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-whole-foods-shows-appreciation-through-transparency\">5. Whole Foods shows appreciation through transparency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health food giant Whole Foods takes transparency to a whole new level, giving employees votes on new hires, field trips to visit suppliers and visibility into everyone\u2019s salaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giving access to top-level company insights and including employees in areas of the business that are usually reserved for senior management shows recognition and appreciation for your people, along with a high level of value and trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-it-should-be-employee-appreciation-day-every-day\">Why it should be Employee Appreciation Day every day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we spoke to 3,500 workers across Canada, the US and the UK about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sagepeople.com\/know-your-people\/experience\/research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">what really drives them at work<\/a>, 66% said that they saw being valued and recognized as the most important thing to them. They want their employer to say: \u2018great job\u2019. They want to feel that their company values the contribution that they\u2019re making to the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The companies that get this right don\u2019t just show their employees they value them on Employee Appreciation Day, though \u2013 they do this all year round. They put their people first, and they know that great experiences at work mean better performance.
