It found that:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CFOs recognize that artificial intelligence, machine learning, and automation will be crucial technologies for organizations to integrate.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CFOs believe non-traditional skills are needed to shape the future of the profession.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CFOs are prioritizing the integration of emerging technologies at their organizations.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-strategic-value-of-the-cfo-nbsp\">The strategic value of the CFO&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roles and responsibilities are evolving rapidly, and expectations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-ca\/blog\/the-redefined-cfo-3-key-trends-to-watch-out-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CFO<\/a> are moving beyond traditional capabilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creative thinking and analytical skills are more important than ever for finance leaders looking to do more with data. In March 2022, Pamela said, CPA Canada issued a new competency map \u201cin which data science, data analytics, data governance, and advanced technologies feature very prominently.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of Pamela\u2019s CFO colleagues \u201care either hiring data scientists or retooling the CPAs that they have,\u201d adding new skills and competencies to their resume.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-ca\/cp\/redefined-cfo-webcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>[Watch the webcast recording]<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-make-way-for-data-science-nbsp-nbsp\">Make way for data science&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cData science is really, really important\u2014those data science kinds of elements that are so valuable for the richness of the data that we&#8217;re all seeing in our organizations and enterprises,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some key findings from our report that reinforce that point:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>92% of Canadian finance leaders agree that it&#8217;s important for CFOs to have the skills they need to drive adoption of new technologies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>78% of digital Canadian finance leaders say their industry needs a new type of CFO, with non-traditional skills that required to shape a successful future.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>40% of organizations are targeting candidates with deep data and AI expertise.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"card-link\">\n\t<div class=\"card-link__container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1440\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2022\/04\/GettyImages-1312633987-1440x810.jpg\" class=\"card-link__image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2022\/04\/GettyImages-1312633987-1440x810.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 48em) 33vw, 100vw\" \/>\t\t\n\t\t<div class=\"card-link__content\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"card-link__title h4\">\n\t\t\t\t<a\n\t\t\t\t\thref=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-ca\/blog\/the-redefined-cfo-3-key-trends-to-watch-out-for\/\"\n\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"card-link__title-link\"\n\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\tThe Redefined CFO: 3 key trends to watch out for\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul class=\"card-link__meta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"card-link__meta-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"card-link__meta-text\"><span class=\"posted-on \"><time class=\"entry-date published\" datetime=\"2022-04-13T05:35:11-04:00\">April 13, 2022<\/time><\/span><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"card-link__meta-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"card-link__meta-text\"><span class=\"reading-time\">4 min read<\/span><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-evolution-of-cfo-roles-nbsp\">The evolution of CFO roles&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe CPA profession is still one that is highly valued, highly skilled, and has lots of expertise,\u201d says Pamela.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd what we need is not necessarily people who can data enter anymore. That&#8217;s all done, thank goodness. But you need someone with the judgment and the insight and the experience that can poke holes in the models, that can identify strategic elements that the output can indicate in new ways forward. So, that&#8217;s really truly exciting for me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-automation-will-set-you-free-nbsp\">Automation will set you free&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Daniel Oh, VP of Medium at Sage,&nbsp; the best thing digital technology can do for CFOs is to make room for them to work smarter and more strategically.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe talk about artificial intelligence, machine learning and automation\u2014these are all crucial technologies for organizations to integrate,\u201d says Oh.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut while there are fears that these technologies will eliminate jobs, the [Sage] report actually reveals that 30 percent of the activities and 60 percent of all occupations could be automated, meaning that most workers will have more time to work on the parts of their roles that can&#8217;t be automated.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are tangible positives to this.&nbsp; \u201cGone are the days of \u201cthese horrible green ledger sheets,\u201d says Pamela.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do the more fun stuff now, which is applying my judgment, my expertise, my experience\u2014and that, I think, is exciting for all the new roles. And I think that offers amazing opportunities.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-ca\/blog\/3-ways-accounting-automation-can-help-cfos-and-controllers-thrive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">automation<\/a> of more tedious tasks is freeing up bandwidth for CFOs to use their creativity in new ways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-more-time-to-think-nbsp\">More time to think&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat it&#8217;s done is actually elevate the thinking part of the roles,\u201d says Pamela.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s elevated the capacity and the capability and has increased opportunities. And we&#8217;ve seen more economic growth as a result. And that, to me, is super exciting. I think it&#8217;s amazing, actually.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-ca\/blog\/the-redefined-cfo-3-key-trends-to-watch-out-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Sage report<\/a> was based on interviews with 1,900 finance leaders (500 from Canada) conducted in early 2022. These finance leaders work in organizations across a variety of sectors including retail, financial services, healthcare, hospitality, technology, non-profit, and professional services that have annual revenue of at least $5 million and employ less than 1,000 people.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-ca\/cp\/redefined-cfo-webcast\/#gate-f8cee55a-74bb-4ec9-a86b-3e5b66d0fba7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>[Download the report]<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report paints a picture of a new generation of Canadian CFOs. \u201cThese leaders are ready to disrupt the status quo\u2014and embracing new technologies is going to be core to their disruption,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow can they, and the companies they manage, set themselves up for future success?\u201d Oh asked Steer in the webcast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat would be your advice to this new era of CFO?\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-set-up-for-success-nbsp\">The set up for success&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steer\u2019s advice is as much about mindset as it is about leveraging your network.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two things you can do, she says, to make digital-first work for you:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Embrace new learning<\/strong>: \u201cYou need to get with the times, you need to keep moving ahead, because the world is moving faster every day and you don&#8217;t want to be left behind.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reach out and call a friend<\/strong>: \u201cI think there is a lot of solidarity and a lot of best practice to be learned among us\u2014I include myself still\u2014[in] the CFO community. Having shared experiences and shared best practices allow us all, in a non-competitive way, to make each other better, and to make our organizations better. That&#8217;s good for our organizations and our employee base. That&#8217;s good for Canada and Canadian businesses and our economy.
