Here are six tips on how to support mental health within your organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-break-down-the-stigma-of-mental-health\">1. Break down the stigma of mental health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step in tackling mental health issues is to break down the culture of silence surrounding it, and creating an environment where people feel comfortable to talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UK banking giant Barclays has launched \u2018This is me\u2019 to do just that, by supporting people to tell their own stories. The campaign includes over 200 employee stories that have been captured on film and in writing, manager training, and policy reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barclays has also made a commitment to normalize mental health issues by signing onto UK mental health initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.time-to-change.org.uk\/get-involved\/get-your-workplace-involved\/employer-pledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Time to Change<\/a>, a pledge to support employees facing these challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-break-down-the-stigma\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>How to break down the stigma <\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Encourage the leadership and senior staff to talk to employees about their own mental health and stress related experiences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signpost free help and resources from mental health charities by way of posters, online resources, magazines and pamphlets in common areas and canteens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Observe mental health awareness week by arranging events for people to talk about mental health, invite external speakers in<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support mental health charities and campaigns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-educate-employees\">2. Educate employees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In any given year, anxiety and depression affects more than 40 million adults in the United States, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/understanding-anxiety\/facts-statistics\">Anxiety &amp; Depression Association of America<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Educate employees, and specifically managers, to spot the early warning signs of mental health problems in their colleagues and how to provide support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accounting firm EY has set up the \u2018r u ok?\u2019 program to enhance EY\u2019s culture of caring by equipping workers to approach colleagues who may be struggling, ask if they are OK and refer them to internal and external resources to help them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This could prevent any individual from reaching crisis point that requires extended sickness absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-educate-employees\"><strong>How to educate employees<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Train employees to spot the warning signs of mental health illness; these could be irritability, signs of fatigue, quality of work subsiding, punctuality sliding, for example<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teach them how to approach colleagues without feeling awkward or causing embarrassment. Remember, workers are not expected to diagnose, just to notice, be empathetic and supportive. Sometimes an individual might not feel they are the right person to do this. Promote mental wellbeing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing well-being at work increases productivity by as much as 12%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumer goods company, Unilever has a wellbeing steering committee to address the physical, mental, emotional and purposeful well-being of employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unilever believes that for its employees to be happy at work, they need to feel a sense of purpose. Therefore, 10,000 employees have so far been given a place on a Purpose workshop, to address what they want from their career and take time for \u2018deep reflection\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smoothies company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stylist.co.uk\/life\/careers\/best-uk-companies-supporting-staff-mental-health-awareness-innocent-smoothies\/207271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Innocent Drinks<\/a> offers a yoga club, and fitness specialist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stylist.co.uk\/life\/careers\/best-uk-companies-supporting-staff-mental-health-awareness-innocent-smoothies\/207271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sweaty Betty<\/a> gives employees the option to start later in the day so that they can concentrate on personal goals in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-promote-mental-wellbeing\"><strong>How to promote mental wellbeing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide exercise (if you aren\u2019t already) such as yoga, running, providing bikes to cycle to work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider starting work later to dedicate time to mindfulness in the morning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage workers to take their lunch break, to walk, to sit in a quiet place, or to read \u2013 any activity of their choice to relax<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-provide-mental-health-counseling\">4. Provide mental health counseling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, more than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">300 million people<\/a> of all ages suffer from depression. Among those newly diagnosed, only about a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/alicegwalton\/2018\/02\/09\/why-are-so-many-people-with-depression-not-getting-treated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">third<\/a> get treatment. And it\u2019s even lower among people of color, older Americans, and other underrepresented groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Financial experts, American Express have an award-winning mental health program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhealthcareleader.com\/2016\/american-express-wayne-burton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Healthy Minds<\/a> program provides part-time counselors at each employee clinic and has hired a clinical psychologist to run the employee assistance program to continuously improve its services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tips-for-providing-counseling-services\"><strong>Tips for providing counseling services<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure you provide free online or 24\/7 telephone counseling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay or part pay for counseling services, so your employees know the organization sees it as important<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide information to employees about counseling services provided by the government and by charities and how to refer themselves also<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-create-quiet-places-at-work\">5. Create quiet places at work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1860846\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a> found two minutes of silence to be more relaxing than listening to \u2018relaxing\u2019 music, based on changes in blood pressure and blood circulation in the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health insurer Medibank offered its staff a choice of more than 26 types of work settings, ranging from indoor quiet spaces and collaborative hubs to WIFI-enabled balconies and places to stand and work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four months after moving into the new HQ, it surveyed employees \u2013 and found that 70% said they were healthier and 66% reported they were more productive, while its call center wing had seen a 5% fall in absenteeism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provide quiet, safe, de-cluttered zones that workers can go to, to break away and decompress. This will have a positive effect on everyone\u2019s mental well-being and avoid stress escalating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-create-quiet-places-at-work\"><strong>How to create quiet places at work <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create a quiet, relaxing, \u2018no phone\u2019 zone with plants \u2013 nature has a proven positive effect on general wellbeing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Designate a part of a garden, if you have one<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide guided meditations and visualizations employees can use in the quiet place to reset, refocus and relax<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-provide-flexible-working\">6. Provide flexible working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>81% of employees we polled placed importance on flexible working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At streaming service Netflix, employees don\u2019t observe traditional 9-to-5 workdays or prescribed holiday and vacation schedules. If they are returning from work after a bout of mental health illness, you could phase their return so they can start working from home and eventually come in. Also, you could alter their working hours in order to help with specific times that trigger anxiety such as the morning or afternoon rush hours, for example<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-importance-of-getting-mental-health-wellbeing-and-support-right\">The importance of getting mental health wellbeing and support right<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mental health issues could have a devastating effect on your people and in turn your business.
