go, HR and People leaders are well-versed pros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it\u2019s through climbing the ladder yourself, prepping mentees, interviewing candidates, or managing those within the talent team, you know interviewing like the back of your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, when hiring for your own team, do you actually ask all the right questions to make sure you bring on board the right people not only for today but for the future?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hiring for your own team isn\u2019t necessarily easier than contributing to the hiring process of other departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The questions you might have asked in an interview for someone else\u2019s team largely go out the window, and you have to get down to the fine details of what they can bring to the team from a competency and skill perspective \u2013 and ask all these questions in a short space of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what questions should you ask to make sure you know you\u2019re hiring the right person for your HR team?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you gauge whether their skills will fit your team?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, most importantly, how can you judge their future potential, and ultimately that of your future HR team?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your expertise and knowing what you need from the candidate plays a big part, of course, but when it comes to specific questions, we have a few suggestions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what we cover:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#tell-anchor-link\">Question 1: \u201cTell me about a time you felt overwhelmed by your workload and what you did to overwhelmed by your workload and what you did to remedy it.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hr-empowering-managers-support-remote-employees\/\">60% of HR leaders said they experienced an increase in their workload<\/a>, so it\u2019s inevitable HR and People professionals across the world were experiencing similar challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It highlighted the intense pressure and number of priorities that HR leaders are expected to juggle \u2013 but also helped many to change and adapt to support their people, enabling their organisation to become more resilient as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, we know there will always be challenges ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your candidate helped to guide their current organisation through the pandemic, they may have a great story about how they managed to handle this transition and some good skills to be agile and resilient in any future times of uncertainty they may come across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-anchor-link\">Question 2: \u201cWhat\u2019s your experience working with HR software?\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/sage-business-cloud\/people\/\">HR technology<\/a> is no longer just a nice to have. It\u2019s an essential in every HR teams\u2019 toolkit for driving their organisation forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, 59% of C-suite and HR leaders say HR is even more focused on digital transformation as a result of the pandemic. Therefore, not investing could leave organisations behind, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/cp\/understanding-hr-transformation\/\">we found in our research<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/cp\/understanding-hr-transformation\/\">40% of People leaders<\/a> feel HR is lagging in digital skills. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to make sure your candidate has worked with HR technology solutions compatible with the ones your organisation uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some red flags might be if your candidate has only worked with very specific types of systems, or is only experienced with outdated technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this shouldn\u2019t be a deal-breaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may simply mean your candidate requires some on-the-job training. Provided they\u2019re not going for a system-based role and show a willingness to learn, especially as technology changes so rapidly, you might find their experience satisfies your team\u2019s need enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"do-anchor-link\">Question 3: \u201cWhat do you think the role of HR will be in five years\u2019 time and where do you see yourself?\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We know the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hr-transforming-people-how-to-get-ahead\/\">world of HR is changing \u2013 and fast<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this is a traditional interview question, it gives you scope to find out not only the interviewee\u2019s viewpoint on how they think the role of HR will change, but also how they will adapt to respond to these changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical sorts of responses to the first part of this question could highlight the transition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/goodbye-hr-hello-people\/\">from HR to People<\/a>; the increasing importance of technology (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/automation-in-hr-how-to-transform\/\">automation<\/a>); the need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/4-ways-hr-agility\/\">develop agility in HR<\/a>; and the recognition of the role of new skills in areas such as analytics and employer marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on their answer to the first part of the question, in five years\u2019 time, they might look to be in a more senior position or specialise in one of the areas they\u2019ve identified that will be likely to change, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a follow up question, you could ask your candidate what first-hand experience they have in these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"#gate-af5cc610-b562-466a-b72a-e09c35f6f873\">Download your free guide, HR in the moment: Changing expectations and perceptions of HR<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"about-anchor-link\">Question 4: \u201cTell me about a time where you\u2019ve needed to be creative in your HR role.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How many times have you looked over a new HR initiative and thought it needs a punchier name or could do with a bit more creative flair?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just 28% of HR leaders rate their own creative skills as expert but they also recognise that it\u2019ll be a top skill for the future, with 73% of HR leaders believing creativity is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/skills-hr-leaders-future\/\">one of the top four skills they\u2019ll need to get ahead<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your candidate is able to demonstrate a creative flair and an aptitude for this way of thinking, your team will be able to get ahead of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen carefully to how the candidate answers this question. Look out for those who demonstrate out-of-the-box thinking and innovation to spot the skills they may have that could benefit your team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-anchor-link\">Question 5: \u201cHow do you see your HR role fitting in to the wider business strategy?\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/build-hr-strategy-from-business-strategy\/\">We\u2019ve said it before, but we\u2019ll say it again<\/a> \u2013 a great HR strategy should link up seamlessly with the overall business strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means those in your team also need to have an interest in how their HR and People skills affects the overall business strategy, and what they can bring to the table. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/cp\/understanding-hr-transformation\/\">57% of C-suite executives<\/a> still seeing HR as a largely administrative function, there\u2019s a lot to do in this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By asking this question, you should be able to grasp a good idea of what their business strengths are alongside their HR skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, are they able to understand how their experience initiatives powers productivity, and how that leads to profit? Are they analytically savvy and understand how People data connects with the financials?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they can demonstrate how the HR function and their role within it affects the business strategy, then you likely have someone with good business acumen, as well as strong HR knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"you-anchor-link\">Question 6: \u201cWhat do you like least about HR and what would you change about it if you could?\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is often a really challenging question for an interviewee \u2013 you\u2019re effectively asking them to pick out a negative aspect of the job or the industry that they\u2019re interviewing for. However, the way your candidate responds to this question could tell you a lot about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effectively, you\u2019ll likely find out one of two things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they go down a road of negativity about all the things they despise about their job, it could be a sign they don\u2019t have much passion for HR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if they can recount how they would fix the problem, this could be a good demonstration of their problem-solving skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Better still, if your candidate identifies a similar problem to the one your organisation faces, it could give you a sign they\u2019ve done their research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they got the job, it could then be a good starting point for the two of you to work together to fix the problem once and for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"#gate-af5cc610-b562-466a-b72a-e09c35f6f873\">Download your free guide, HR in the moment: Changing expectations and perceptions of HR<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"question-anchor-link\">Question 7: \u201cWhat question would you ask me if you were the interviewer?\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, an oldie but a goodie \u2013 this is your candidate\u2019s opportunity to demonstrate leadership, on-the-spot thinking and a chance for them to learn a bit more about you, the interviewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a great question to ask, especially if you\u2019re hiring someone for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/glossary\/what-is-talent-acquisition\/\">talent acquisition<\/a> role, as it will give them a chance to demonstrate some of their own interviewing technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the best responses to this question include, \u201cIf you could change one thing about this company right now, what would it be?\u201d and \u201cif you were able to double your team\u2019s budget, what would be the first thing you\u2019d spend it on?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By asking this question, they gain some insight into you as the interviewer and the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"deliver-anchor-link\">Deliver great candidate experiences to get the best talent for tomorrow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting the right candidates through the door is hard. But finding a great one is even harder \u2013 and that\u2019s for all candidates, not just HR.
