This is growing by 2000 per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jay says: \u201c60% of our community is female, 35% black, 25% Asian, 20% from a low-income background, 20% from the LGBT community, and 10% disabled. However, there are specific characteristics that businesses should think about when engaging with this audience. These people are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digital natives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to be engaging with them directly in the digital world, even in places that businesses haven\u2019t traditionally targeted, such as online gaming platforms such as Twitch or social media platforms such as TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Activists<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They care about change in the world, which means they may belong to movements such as Black Lives Matter, communities driving change such as LGBTQ+, or groups surrounding the environment and climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your business is looking to back a cause, make sure you honestly believe in it and can commit to it for the rest of your existence as a brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Co-creators<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They can create by themselves on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube, sharing content across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great way to engage with Generation Z is to co-create with them and ask them what they want to see from you as a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"generation-anchor-link\">Generation Z expects you to be diverse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jay says: \u201cWhether you\u2019re in a Discord group or Reddit channel, Generation Z engages with people from different demographics all around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Generation Z believes in individualism to its further extent, where everybody can have their own way of existing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDiversity is just a standard. So as a business, having diversity should be the standard way of doing things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s not where you need 10 years to get there\u2014you should be making strides to move the needle as soon as humanly possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a black man with a business centred around Generation Z, Jay understands that Imagen Insights needs to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hire-employees-first-time\/\">hire people<\/a> from diverse backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t require degrees,\u201d says Jay. \u201cWe understand that getting into university may be challenging for people from certain backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jay advises businesses to promote job positions in place from a variety of different places\u2014don\u2019t rely on the same sources repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you always pick the sources you know best, you may get a pool of similar candidates that lack the diversity you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for places and communities where people from different walks of life may be hanging out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That may well be online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the initiative, and you may well find candidates that differ from the people you\u2019ve used to, which is great if you\u2019re looking to change the dynamic of your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jay says: \u201cGet out there and look for places where you can place adverts that can attract people from different backgrounds, whether that\u2019s race or social-economic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTechnology means that there\u2019s no reason we can\u2019t have workplace diversity. The internet makes it much easier than it ever used to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t play ignorance. You could go into a platform like LinkedIn, ask a question on how to get diverse talent, and get thousands of responses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"#gate-25e7c012-332e-43b6-a448-dd2fe3fc5db5\">Download your free copy of A guide to hiring and supporting your first employees<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"wants-anchor-link\">Generation Z wants hybrid working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to the working world, many of us have had to turn up to the workplace every day. However, the pandemic has turned things on their head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although many people are going back to offices and other workplace, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/help-employees-work-from-home\/\">working from home<\/a> is now normalised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workforce members of Generation Z are naturally comfortable with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/remote-working-virtual-teams\/\">remote working<\/a>. They are digital natives who seamlessly understand cloud-based productivity tools as they\u2019ve been using similar tools all their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, evidence suggests that Generation Z don\u2019t want to stay entirely remote, as they may feel they are losing early career advancement opportunities and the \u2018buzz\u2019 of a busy workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent McKinsey and Company research says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20210729-why-younger-workers-want-hybrid-work-most\">18 to 29-year-olds are most interested in a hybrid work setup<\/a>, working two to three days a week at home and the rest of the time in the main workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before coronavirus, Imagen Insights was looking to purchase office space, but a co-working setup suits the business much better from a practicality\u2014and sustainability\u2014perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jay says: \u201cWe\u2019re a small team of 11, but everybody comes in on different days. A co-working space costs much less, and it\u2019s much better from that environmental perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are these small things we can do to try and move the needle when it comes to sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coronavirus was a time of reflection. Jay asked himself questions about whether he was running the business as effectively and efficiently as possible, especially when meeting people face to face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says: \u201cIt\u2019s crazy to me that I used to ride around London on my motorbike trying to have face-to-face meetings with people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would be getting my sales team on the Tube, running between four or five physical meetings a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, you could do one physical meeting a day, do three from the office or home virtually, and have time to spare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"turn-anchor-link\">Turn challenges into opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as the growth of remote and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hybrid-working-manage-remote-workplace-employees\/\">hybrid working<\/a>, the pandemic signalled a time when many business owners have had to change their business models or the way they work and interact with customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the economy slowed due to the pandemic\u2019s effects in 2020, it was a <a href=\"https:\/\/unctad.org\/news\/how-covid-19-triggered-digital-and-e-commerce-turning-point\">boon for many businesses in the digital and e-commerce sectors<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many customers who previously weren\u2019t regularly on the internet discovered they could access various products and services from the comfort of their own homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These new purchasing habits are set to stay with us as Generation Z becomes the dominant consumer. There\u2019s undoubtedly a push and motivation for businesses to take advantage of digital and sales channels they may not have pursued before coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jay says: \u201cCoronavirus was an accelerant to our business. Our business grew exponentially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we would have seen the same type of growth if it wasn\u2019t for coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything we do is online. Our platform and community are online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A lot of our clients said they couldn\u2019t do focus groups like they used to do, and it was great that we offered a new way to get the information they needed with our insights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"invest-anchor-link\">Invest in the right technology early<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The technology needed to get rapid insights from thousands of Generation Z people is the backbone of Jay\u2019s business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For other businesses, particularly in market research, Jay suggests there\u2019s a reluctance to invest in technology, mainly due to the cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He believes it can often turn out more expensive not to invest in the right tech at an early stage, in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He adds: \u201cI\u2019m not talking about the wishy-washy improvement of the business by 5% or 10%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you think it\u2019ll exponentially increase the productivity or output, then invest even if the cost is painful for that year and will cut into your profits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"single-cta gated-content\">\n\t<div class=\"single-cta__positioner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"single-cta__wrapper has-dark-background-color\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"single-cta__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"single-cta__title h3\">A guide to hiring and supporting your first employees<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"single-cta__description\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>At Sage, we\u2019ve joined forces with Be the Business to help you hire and inspire your new employees like a boss.
