Read up on sustainability practices and HR\u2019s role<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#is\">Sustainability is a team effort and the responsibility of everyone<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><div class=\"single-cta\">\n\t<a\n\t\tclass=\"button button--primary gate-c02f527f-e767-45e4-bb44-cabb47548500\"\n\t\trole=\"button\"\n\t\tdata-button-location=\"content_area\"\n\t\thref=\"#gate-c02f527f-e767-45e4-bb44-cabb47548500\"\n\t>Download your free copy of HR in 2030 to discover five trends progressive People leaders need to know to get ahead<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sustainability\">Sustainability \u2013 should HR take the lead?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There are various views on the role of HR when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/tag\/sustainability\/\">sustainability<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Discussions aren\u2019t helped by the fact that environmental sustainability and business sustainability are often blurred \u2013 as in, making the business resilient long-term, particularly in terms of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There\u2019s a clear case for HR taking the lead on the second. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But the case for HR taking the lead on sustainability across the entire organisation can be uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The main reason for this is simple: environmental sustainability simply must be a whole-organisation issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Sustainability is changing the way people do everything; it determines the jobs they choose as well as the products they buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The idea that sustainability is an HR responsibility because \u2018it\u2019s about people\u2019 doesn\u2019t really hold up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">HR can\u2019t take on company environmental sustainability as part of their ever-growing workload, especially as 60% of HR leaders have seen an increase in their workload since the start of the pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/how-pandemic-changed-hr\/\">our research found<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There does seem to be confusion in organisations about this today, however. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Our research also found that a quarter of HR leaders are already leading sustainability efforts in their organisation \u2013 and 40% of C-suite execs believe HR is leading sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So, HR teams are already driving sustainability efforts in companies, and in some cases, there\u2019s an expectation from the executive team for this to be the case \u2013 even if HR teams feel this shouldn\u2019t fit in their remit, or have the resource to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A state of play many HR leaders may be familiar with, as the role of HR continues to expand and take on more and more areas of responsibility outside their traditional wheelhouse in organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what\">What role should HR play with sustainability?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Of course, this doesn\u2019t mean HR can\u2019t take a strong stance and play a part in building more sustainable workplaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In fact, we\u2019ve already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hr-sustainability-tips\/\">published an article on this subject<\/a> and there\u2019s so much HR can do to showcase their stance and lead by example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It makes perfect sense for any responsible organisation to integrate sustainability into all processes where possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hr-in-2030\/\">HR in 2030<\/a> report, April Marcot, chief people officer at recruitment and HR services firm McArthur, highlights sustainability as \u201csomething else that workforces will expect a much more serious attitude towards\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Meanwhile, Linda Holbeche, co-director of the Holbeche Partnership, explains that HR will need to play some role: \u201cHR will also have to support in pushing through an environmentally friendly agenda to align with focus on these areas within society as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So, what can HR and People leaders do to drive sustainability in the HR function, as part of wider strategies across the business?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here\u2019s four areas HR leaders can get involved in within People strategies and processes for a more sustainable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ask\">1. Ask your employees what they need to help make their organisation more sustainable \u2013 and act on feedback<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While you\u2019ll want company leadership as a whole to lead the overall discussion on sustainability, HR can be a great facilitator of an open dialogue between the team leading sustainability and your employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As the values and demands of both the business and your people will change over time, it\u2019s important to keep the conversation going and find out what your employees really want to help make their organisation more sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You\u2019ll find employees will have no shortage of ideas on this topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Keep listening to employees to gauge sentiment shifts. For example, if you\u2019ve implemented something new, has this increased positive views on what the company is doing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What new things are they concerned about, or do they have ideas on adopting more sustainable approaches to new company developments?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s important to act on feedback, but remember, you can\u2019t do everything at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Use employee feedback to understand what their priorities are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What areas are they most concerned about? Where can the biggest wins be made?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This will help you prioritise your sustainability efforts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">By asking your workforce to rate different strategies according to what they feel is most important, the company can then attribute change directly to employee input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"work\">2. Work with the organisation to create a sustainability team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There will be no shortage of advocates for sustainability within your organisation. Tap into their enthusiasm and desire for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A green team, a group of individuals focusing on the company\u2019s greener efforts, could be a good place to start for them to make suggestions and changes within your organisation. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While this might not be something you\u2019d look to lead, HR could certainly help to form the group and bring ideas to the table, such as charity days focused on sustainability and team beach cleans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Larger companies may also have a person or a team dedicated to sustainability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you\u2019re a midsize or larger company and you don\u2019t have this in place, then there\u2019s a role for HR to play in establishing this and getting buy in from the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This also means any sole responsibility can move away from HR and into this team \u2013 a win-win situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><div class=\"single-cta\">\n\t<a\n\t\tclass=\"button button--primary gate-c02f527f-e767-45e4-bb44-cabb47548500\"\n\t\trole=\"button\"\n\t\tdata-button-location=\"content_area\"\n\t\thref=\"#gate-c02f527f-e767-45e4-bb44-cabb47548500\"\n\t>Download your free copy of HR in 2030 to discover five trends progressive People leaders need to know to get ahead<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"seriously\">3. Seriously consider the role of hybrid working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is an area where you really can lead from the front. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We already know that hybrid working can enhance your recruitment and retention efforts, but it can also help reduce pollution if employees have the flexibility to work from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Find out what your employees want in terms of hybrid working and travel, then set out clear policies for your organisation, so employees know where they stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">After all, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ey.com\/en_gl\/news\/2021\/09\/businesses-suffering-commitment-issues-on-flexible-working\">90% of employees saying they want flexibility in when and where they work<\/a>, hybrid working models are here to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"read\">4. Read up on sustainability practices and HR\u2019s role<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Even without leading sustainability in organisations, HR and People teams still have a role to play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Business leaders are attuned to the fact becoming greener as a business attracts more customers and can power growth \u2013 if efforts are authentic and drive real change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As a result, sustainability is top of mind for many company bosses. And all business leaders have a role to play, including HR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There\u2019s a wealth of information available to HR leaders, so keeping your finger on the pulse is vital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Take time each week or month to understand what other HR leaders are doing, discover best practices, and take time with your team to elevate work you\u2019re leading on, or playing a part in, on your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Our article on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hr-sustainability-tips\/\">top nine ways HR teams can drive sustainability<\/a>, and our research report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hr-in-2030\/\">HR in 2030<\/a>, \u2013 which looks at how HR\u2019s role will shift and change in this area \u2013 are both great places to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is\">Sustainability is a team effort and the responsibility of everyone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The sustainability of organisations is crucial to the future of our planet, and important to both your existing employees and future hires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If COP27 is to meet its targets, private enterprises must be involved, and so all organisations must make sustainability a priority, led by those with the scope to enforce business-wide policy and governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And while HR have a part to play, it absolutely shouldn\u2019t sit within your remit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">HR leaders have too much on their plates to entirely lead efforts on this, too.
