Everyone does it\u2014putting off tedious tasks because there&#8217;s something more exciting or immediately pressing to work on for your clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But preparing for the first phase of  MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA, or MTD for Income Tax), effective from April 2026, doesn&#8217;t have to be one of those boring tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/mtd-for-income-tax-accountants-need-to-know\/\">MTD for ITSA<\/a> will transform how you work with your clients and do business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of spending hours battling through tax return tasks that offer very little business value, you can focus on real human-centred consultative work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/mtd-itsa-accountants-prepare-sole-trader-clients\/\">sole traders<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/making-tax-digital-accountants-prepare-landlord-clients\/\">landlords<\/a> with an annual business income that\u2019s more than \u00a350,000 will need to file quarterly returns using MTD-compatible software, and complete end-of-period statements and a final declaration every tax year.
