But time and time again, we also see them as the reason a business grows and becomes more successful. Many of today\u2019s high-performing businesses even started in a recession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how can such tough conditions lead to wildly opposite outcomes for different businesses?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that even giant, well-established businesses can go bust. Woolworths, MFI and Zavvi (the UK arm of Virgin Megastores) all fell to the 2008 recession alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This teaches us that surviving one isn\u2019t guaranteed by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Being big<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being established for a long time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having a lot of money<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having large teams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many businesses can weather the storm, and come out the other side better, more competitive, and more profitable. Netflix is one such example that grew to the giant it is today after thriving in the very same recession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what separates those that fail or go bust, from those that succeed and even grow?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"businesses\">Businesses that grow in a recession have different beliefs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The position your business will be in after a recession is not determined by your resources, but your psychology. What matters most is how you think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Believing that a recession is an isolated period of difficulty will only put you on the back foot. James Ashford talks about the inevitability of not only recessions, but all the tough times you\u2019ll face:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says: \u201cStorms are the only things that are guaranteed in business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou will always face tough times, whether that\u2019s recessions, changing government policies, disruptive competitors, clients leaving, or staff leaving. All these things will happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acceptance that downturns will always come is a change in your fundamental belief. One that influences how you\u2019ll think about and approach each day of adversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you fundamentally believe your business might fail, you\u2019re increasing the chances it will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because this belief will lead to fear, and you\u2019ll start taking negative actions that lead to negative results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reducing prices = Less revenue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pausing marketing activities = Fewer new customers and loss of market share<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accepting poor behaviour from clients = Less profitability per client<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Denying salary increases for your teams = Low staff morale and resignations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, imagine what would happen if you changed that fundamental belief. What if you started to view a recession as a period ripe with opportunity? Guard your mind<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A huge challenge to ridding yourself of a harmful mindset is of the negativity that\u2019s around right now. Especially in the news. The news cycle can make it feel like there isn\u2019t a day without negative stories on a global scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But James reminds us why these stories always make the headlines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says: \u201cThe news has one job. Not to inform you. But to get you to watch it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe best way it can do that is to create fear. Why? Because our brains are hard wired to keep us alive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic proved this with how many people paid attention to the daily number of positive cases and death tolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, it\u2019s best to limit the amount of news you\u2019re watching. And if you do tune in, get the information you need and leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you hear that interest rates have changed, find out what the new figure is and stop consuming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guarding your mind doesn\u2019t just end with the news either. Well-meaning people around you may also cause negative thinking because of the fear they are feeling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is the time to block this out. Get your head down and focus on what matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Pursue growth every day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Growth doesn\u2019t just happen. You have to set aside time each day to make it happen. Whether it\u2019s audio books, YouTube videos, podcasts, or courses, there are limitless ways you can become better, more positive, and smarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t just have to be learning, either. You could spend time reflecting on your business, work on developing your processes, or meet regularly with your team to discuss what they need to do their best work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growth happens when you combine two things: proactivity and consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason this approach is so powerful for your mindset is because it doesn\u2019t allow recessive thinking to come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have less headspace for fear when you\u2019re proactively improving yourself and your business. You\u2019re telling yourself and those around you that you\u2019re on an upward trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dedicate as little as 30 minutes a day to this and you\u2019ll hardly recognise yourself when the recession is over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Focus on your health<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is more important than your finances. And the state of your business. And your relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because if you aren\u2019t physically and mentally healthy, you can\u2019t do anything else or help anyone else. You can\u2019t run your practice, make the right decisions, or support your clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;And you certainly can\u2019t keep a positive mindset during tough times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe reason you don\u2019t find time to focus on your health is because it hasn\u2019t been prioritised; it needs to be number one,\u201d says James.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou need to be spending 30 minutes to an hour a day getting your body moving. It doesn\u2019t have to be anything crazy. It can be as simple as going for a walk. Get sunlight and fresh air. And do this every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not used to prioritising your health, this can feel like a big change. But it doesn\u2019t have to be. We\u2019re not talking getting a six pack or running a marathon. It\u2019s just about recognising that your health isn\u2019t optional and making the decision to invest in it is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need support, work with a personal trainer, nutritionist, or both. Try joining exercise groups, playing a new sport, going for walks, or even switching to a standing desk. There are many ways to make positive changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your mental health will benefit from physical changes you make too. And if you need more support in this area, prioritise talking to people you trust. Seek professional help with someone who specialises in offering mental health support if you need it too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Aim higher<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In times of uncertainty, it can be tempting to set the bar a little lower than you usually would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because when you\u2019re faced with a steeper challenge than you\u2019re used to, you tend to think or feel you\u2019re more likely to fail unless you lower your ambition. But this is simply another negative belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In tough times, you should be aiming higher than you usually would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not to say have unrealistic expectations. But if you switch your beliefs to \u201cit\u2019s ok to aim high and fail\u201d, you\u2019ll likely achieve great things, even if you don\u2019t quite reach your targets. You\u2019ll certainly achieve more than if you start from a place of negativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aiming low is the same as setting self-imposed limitations on what you can achieve. In an extreme example, you can set a ridiculous goal that seems ambitious even for \u2018normal\u2019 times:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say, double your fees over the next 12 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you only managed a 20% increase, you\u2019d still have achieved more than if you\u2019d set a negative goal, such as reducing prices to try and retain clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of what you do, aiming high puts you in a strong psychological position. When you start thinking bigger, your staff will too, and so will your clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe moment we start to become aspirational in our thinking is the moment our brains start to figure out ways to achieve things,\u201d says James.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Give even more<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To succeed in tough times, you need to go even further for your clients, industry, and the community around you. This doesn\u2019t mean overworking for clients, allowing them to run you ragged, and not charging accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means providing more value than usual. And there are endless ways you can do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could create a social media group where you share general advice on changes in industry, start creating video content that passes on everything you learn, or put together some top tips on navigating a recession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For your community, it could be volunteering, helping out a neighbour, or supporting a friend who is struggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It all comes down to having empathy for others and showing a genuine desire to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is like jet fuel for your positivity. Because when you give something away, you tell yourself that you have more than enough, and that\u2019s a very strong mindset. You\u2019re thinking abundantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By being grateful, you also stave off the negativity, and can instead focus on growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"to\">How to build resilience in your accountancy business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve got that positive mindset right, you\u2019ll no doubt be taking some of the more expected business resilience actions to minimise down time, protect any vulnerabilities, and keep your operations running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these are important to think about, but a recession is also a great time to assess and improve the foundations of your accounting practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are five ideas that will help you come out of a recession stronger:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Set new standards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your customers are in tough times too. By raising your company\u2019s standards, you demonstrate your value at a time where they need your guidance the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about your customer service performance, consider how you charge, and boost upselling of additional services that clients need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you set new standards at a time of difficulty, clients will remember you as the practice that stepped up when it mattered most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hone your processes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, your practice is a business too. In difficult economic conditions, you need to evaluate your processes and find ways to be more productive and cost effective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there are bottlenecks in your workflows, it\u2019s more important than ever to sort them out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honing your processes also helps with the point above.
