Own your current HR space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">More than half of the C-suite say HR today isn\u2019t playing a leading role in operational excellence (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/the-changing-face-of-hr\/\">62%<\/a>), skilling and upskilling (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/the-changing-face-of-hr\/\">55%<\/a>) and company culture (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/the-changing-face-of-hr\/\">54%<\/a>)\u2014areas that traditionally sit in HR\u2019s wheelhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is a problem because business leaders aren\u2019t seeing the value HR brings across all these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So how can HR leaders even hope to make the jump to CEO?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBe a business person that specialises in HR, rather than just being an HR guru,\u201d advises Ben Willis, partner in People Advisory Services at EY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Think about the business strategies first and then how HR can drive them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYou need to make the business see that the way we treat our employees is not just about the retention of staff, it\u2019s about creating an environment so that people perform at their best,\u201d says Gethin Nadin, psychologist, HR author, and chief innovation officer at Benefex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Both HR leaders and C-suite leaders agree that talent management is the top priority for business, but while more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/the-changing-face-of-hr\/\">20%<\/a> of business leaders prioritise financial growth, only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/the-changing-face-of-hr\/\">13%<\/a> of HR leaders do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A mind shift in HR is needed here &#8211; it\u2019s people that drive the bottom line \u2013 hence financial growth is a direct result of HR, not a biproduct of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In order to make the leap, it\u2019s vital HR leaders are aligned to the same priorities as the C-suite and are seen as drivers of these priorities within the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"find\">2. Find yourself a great mentor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/christinecomaford\/2019\/07\/03\/new-study-76-of-people-think-mentors-are-important-but-only-37-have-one\/?sh=6c0be0444329\">76%<\/a> of people recognise that mentors are important to their development, just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/christinecomaford\/2019\/07\/03\/new-study-76-of-people-think-mentors-are-important-but-only-37-have-one\/?sh=6c0be0444329\">37%<\/a> of people have one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A good mentor is vital to tap into advice and support that might not always be available to HR leaders in their day-to-day roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Ben Brooks, founder and CEO at Pilot, says: \u201cThe first thing is to state your ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cDon\u2019t make it a secret if [becoming CEO] is an interest. Solicit feedback about your gaps or how others would want to see you grow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So, first thing\u2019s first, find yourself a mentor. They can be within or outside of your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Have a set of defined goals and targets for yourself that you want to solicit their help with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Remember, mentors are often busy people, running their own businesses (or working within them), so don\u2019t give them a load of paperwork to sift through but rather succinct goals and ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">At first it may seem like they are doing the lion\u2019s share of the work in offloading their wisdom to you, but eventually the relationship will equalise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Be prepared, cooperative and collaborative, have regular check-ins with them to monitor your progress and hold yourself accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Finally, once you\u2019ve ticked off those goals, come up with new targets together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHR leaders must be really well connected with business thinkers, using their networks to develop their connections and learning,\u201d says Angela O\u2019Connor, CEO and founder at The HR Lounge, if they really want to take the next step to CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><div class=\"single-cta\">\n\t<a\n\t\tclass=\"button button--primary gate-ad8d54a3-dfef-464b-97cb-5bb72895a560\"\n\t\trole=\"button\"\n\t\tdata-button-location=\"content_area\"\n\t\thref=\"#gate-ad8d54a3-dfef-464b-97cb-5bb72895a560\"\n\t>Download your free report, From HR leader to CEO, and discover five secret tips from experts to help you get to the next level<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"develop\">3. Develop your influence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/the-changing-face-of-hr\/\">90%<\/a> of C-suite executives and HR believe a major challenge facing HR teams\u2019 success is the perceived value of their worth in the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Despite HR\u2019s herculean efforts in the past few years navigating their people through the pandemic and post-pandemic world of work, they still have some way to go in convincing their own organisations of their value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Frustratingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/the-changing-face-of-hr\/\">63%<\/a> of C-suite leaders admit to still seeing HR\u2019s role as administrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe days when HR could sit in a little office and dish out tea, biscuits, sympathy and a box of tissues are long gone,\u201d says Jo Land, group CEO at Avenues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYou have to be seen in the business and you have to be credible with the rest of the business, because no one will take you seriously as the CEO if you haven\u2019t got the business nous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Show your ability to flex, change and grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Testing and experimenting in HR will help you to step away from the status quo, so you can show how you\u2019re innovating not just in your own department but across the whole business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Become cross-functional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It can be difficult to break the perception that HR people can only do HR, so demonstrate your abilities by working on projects outside of HR, whether it\u2019s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Opening new offices in new territories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implementing new software and IT systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mergers and acquisitions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cGain broader experience beyond HR,\u201d advises Ann Pickering, a strategic adviser and coach to senior executives, and former CPO and chief of staff at O2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cA move into another commercial area of the company is always helpful, or perhaps taking on a dual role.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you\u2019re going to build your personal brand, you need to demonstrate that you have the skills to be a CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As an HR and People leader, you\u2019re fully capable, but you may need to brush up on a few things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">For many HR people, their Achilles heel is the financials, so make the effort to learn new things, talk to the experts internally and externally, or even take a business course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"focus\">4. Focus on the numbers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While HR leaders are becoming more comfortable with HR analytics, to make the leap to CEO, they need to go beyond just the impact on people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">They need to transfer those skills and leverage other data and analytics tools to drive decisions that not only work for employees but takes the business in a profitable direction, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Learn to ask the right questions to find out what\u2019s impacting your organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Speak to your current CEO and find out what\u2019s keeping them up at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You can then start looking at the data you have at your fingertips to see how you can make a start on improving these challenges from a people perspective, working with others in the C-suite to action them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely vital that HR people move from the soft stuff to understanding the harder stuff\u2014which is the data,\u201d explains Oliver Anderson, former CEO at 10x Psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The best way to fully understand the data is to collaborate with other departments in the business. Pool together your resources and skills to analyse the data in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Don\u2019t just look at it from HR\u2019s perspective but through the lens of the entire business to provide solutions that align with the overall business goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHR skills alone aren\u2019t enough to make someone a great CEO,\u201d says Ben Brooks at Pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cT-shaped leaders need to be as broad as they are deep, knowing not just HR but finance, strategy, operations, risk, technology, sales, marketing, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><div class=\"single-cta\">\n\t<a\n\t\tclass=\"button button--primary gate-ad8d54a3-dfef-464b-97cb-5bb72895a560\"\n\t\trole=\"button\"\n\t\tdata-button-location=\"content_area\"\n\t\thref=\"#gate-ad8d54a3-dfef-464b-97cb-5bb72895a560\"\n\t>Download your free report, From HR leader to CEO, and discover five secret tips from experts to help you get to the next level<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"become\">5. Become even more commercially astute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To become a CEO, you need to understand your organisation\u2019s business goals and strategy from all perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And you need to know how to talk the talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Ben Willis at EY says: \u201cConvey and project an argument using language that will resonate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cLanguage that resonates with the CEO might need to change when you go and talk to the CFO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAnd you might need to change it again when you talk to the CMO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThink: How do I get their attention quickly?
