Then&nbsp;they&nbsp;try to remember which transactions&nbsp;they\u2019ve&nbsp;categorised, which invoices still need raising, and whether that VAT return is&nbsp;actually due&nbsp;when&nbsp;they&nbsp;think it is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your customers are going through this right now and if your&nbsp;product isn\u2019t solving it, they\u2019ll move to one that is. In this instance, we\u2019re talking about&nbsp;their&nbsp;business bank account.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than exporting data, importing it elsewhere, and manually reconciling the difference,&nbsp;transactions are categorised automatically&nbsp;with&nbsp;books updated&nbsp;in real time&nbsp;and&nbsp;the&nbsp;SMB\u2019s&nbsp;tax position visible whenever&nbsp;it<s>\u2019<\/s>s&nbsp;needed. The accounting happens in the background, as a function of&nbsp;normal&nbsp;banking activity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&nbsp;completely&nbsp;removes a layer of admin that most business owners have&nbsp;reluctantly&nbsp;accepted as part of the job,&nbsp;but it doesn\u2019t have to be that way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not a concept or a roadmap&nbsp;item;&nbsp;customers are using it right now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-it-matters-right-now-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why it matters right now&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s a regulatory reason this is particularly timely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/why-mtd-is-the-next-big-opportunity-for-uk-banks-fintechs-and-saas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Making Tax Digital for Income Tax<\/a>,&nbsp;HMRC&#8217;s requirement for sole traders and landlords earning over \u00a350,000 to submit quarterly digital tax updates,&nbsp;came into effect in April 2026. The threshold drops to \u00a330,000 in April 2027, pulling in hundreds of thousands more&nbsp;people. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icaew.com\/insights\/tax-news\/2025\/aug-2025\/up-to-3-million-individuals-may-need-to-comply-with-mtd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HMRC actually estimates just over 1 million<\/a>&nbsp;in 2027 and a further 975k in 2028 when it drops again to \u00a320,000.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For anyone affected, this isn&#8217;t just an admin change but a fundamental shift in how&nbsp;small business owners will&nbsp;interact with HMRC and the tools&nbsp;they\u2019ll&nbsp;use to do so and remain compliant.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who&nbsp;embed&nbsp;accounting&nbsp;into their banking experience are&nbsp;positioned to win here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With embedded accounting,&nbsp;data&nbsp;flows in,&nbsp;SMB&nbsp;records&nbsp;stay&nbsp;current, and the submission process becomes far less stressful&nbsp;because&nbsp;an SME\u2019s&nbsp;books are&nbsp;up to date&nbsp;by default rather than in a&nbsp;last-minute&nbsp;scramble for the deadline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If&nbsp;your platform&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;MTD-ready,&nbsp;your customers will go looking for one that is.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-nbsp-your-platform-should-be-delivering-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What&nbsp;your platform should be delivering<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Embedded accounting is still a relatively new capability, and not all implementations are equal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here&#8217;s what good looks like and&nbsp;what your customers will increasingly expect:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Real-time transaction categorisation.<\/strong>&nbsp;Transactions should be automatically organised as they happen.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Invoicing and cash flow in one place.<\/strong>&nbsp;Raising invoices and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/what-are-embedded-payments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seeing their impact on cash position<\/a> shouldn&#8217;t require leaving your&nbsp;platform.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tax-ready records.<\/strong>&nbsp;MTD-compliant by design, not an afterthought.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>No double-entry.<\/strong>&nbsp;If the same piece of information exists in&nbsp;the&nbsp;bank and&nbsp;the&nbsp;accounting&nbsp;record,&nbsp;it&nbsp;should only&nbsp;be entered&nbsp;once.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-bigger-picture-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The bigger picture<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have the opportunity to own&nbsp;a version of business banking that functions as genuinely useful infrastructure for&nbsp;an SME owner running their business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re in a world where&nbsp;their bank&nbsp;should be far more than just a place where money sits.&nbsp;Both you and your customer&nbsp;should understand&nbsp;their&nbsp;financial position in real time, see potential&nbsp;issues before they become problems, and&nbsp;they should be seeing you as the support that&nbsp;removes&nbsp;the compliance anxiety that comes with tax season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s not a distant future.
