But how far has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/peter-jones\/\">ambition taken you<\/a> when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/growing-and-running\/\">growing your business<\/a>? What are your ambitions for your company and where do you see it in one, five or 10 years?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ambition you have for your business can drive you to succeed \u2013 something that can be essential when dealing with the many challenges you\u2019ll face as you run your company. But what sort of impact does ambition in business have on your fellow entrepreneurs and business owners?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April, Sage hosted a Twitter discussion with a number of influential people in the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) world on the topic of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/peter-jones-ambition\/\">business ambition<\/a>. The idea was to engage with experts and business owners alike to find out how they envision ambition and what we can do to help each other achieve our goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/sage-reveals-top-100-global-business-influencers-list-2017\/\">Sage Top 100<\/a> global business influencers for 2017 joined the conversation and offered their advice on ambition, where it comes from for them and what you can do to channel it so you can be as successful as possible. Here\u2019s what they had to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-does-your-ambition-stem-from\"><strong>Where does your ambition stem from?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAmbition should always be focused on positive results and tempered by professionalism. Overzealous behaviour can certainly cause issues but the key is to remain focused on positive business results.\u201d <strong>Eric Kavanagh <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eric_kavanagh\">@eric_kavanagh<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt comes from having a mission to transform business leadership around the world. If forced, it can show a lack of authenticity and turn colleagues\/employees off.\u201d <strong>Andy McFetrich <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndyMacRecruits\">@AndyMacRecruits<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou must be humble in business. You must always realise that without customers, you don\u2019t have a business. So, serve them well.\u201d <strong>Shep Hyken <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Hyken\">@Hyken<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-it-the-process-or-the-goal-that-drives-you\"><strong>Is it the process or the goal that drives you?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the transformation, the outcome. It\u2019s making a huge impact on people\u2019s lives. It is one of the most powerful and humbling things one human being can do for another<strong>.\u201d Ian Knowlson <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IanKnowlson\">@IanKnowlson<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-will-your-current-role-take-you-where-you-want-to-go\"><strong>Will your current role take you where you want to go?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI used to think a lot about five-year plans but now not so much. Too many things come along and wreck plans in good and bad ways. Now I focus on making sure in the day to day I am energised, learning and creating.\u201d <strong>Jon Reed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonerp\">@jonerp<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow you approach your current situation will determine where it will take you. Always make the most of things in a positive way and learn from every experience. Even in tough times. Things get caught up in the grey area and waiting for sign off.\u201d <strong>Lisa Pattenden <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/London_Lady\">@London_lady<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSpeed and agility of decision-making. The ability to make a timely decision, execute it and drive towards the outcome promptly is hugely valuable. SMEs can often get closer to their customers, creating both business and emotional relationships in the process and that\u2019s gold, right when your customers are invested in your business because your success is also their success.\u201d <strong>Steven John <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SJTechGuy\">@SJTechGuy<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-brexit-an-opportunity-in-disguise\"><strong>Is Brexit an opportunity in disguise?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always an opportunity somewhere. Think of it as a stone that falls on the ground \u2013 it inherently creates new spaces and gaps owned and filled in.
