The end of the year is a great time to reflect on the past 12 months and set goals for the future. Why not take some time to put some resolutions and plans in place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article will take a look at some of the challenges your company will face in 2019. It also offers advice from a group of business owners, which you can use to inspire your new year\u2019s business resolutions as you look to succeed in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-business-challenges-in-2019\"><strong>Business challenges in 2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tax-returns\"><strong>Tax returns<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve got a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/file-a-tax-return-online\/\">self-assessment tax return<\/a> to submit to HMRC, don\u2019t delay. The deadline to submit it is midnight on 31 January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/sage-business-cloud\/accounting\/\">accounting software<\/a> can help you to make sure all your numbers are in one place, making it easier when it comes to getting your figures together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might also be worth employing the services of an accountant when dealing with your tax returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-brexit\"><strong>Brexit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK is due to leave the European Union at 11pm on 29 March. At the time of writing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/how-will-brexit-affect-businesses\/\">what Brexit will mean for the UK<\/a> is still unclear. It will be one of the biggest challenges that UK businesses will face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, despite the uncertainty, it\u2019s still worth putting contingency plans in place now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-making-tax-digital\"><strong>Making Tax Digital<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/cp\/making-tax-digital\/\">Making Tax Digital<\/a> is HMRC\u2019s new scheme that will streamline and digitise the tax system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It starts from 1 April and will initially apply to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/register-for-vat-online\/\">VAT registered businesses<\/a> that are over the VAT threshold of \u00a385,000. If this applies to you, your business will have to file VAT returns digitally using functional compatible software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new scheme will make your business more efficient and effective when it comes to record keeping and dealing with your tax returns. It pays to start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/making-tax-digital-checklist\/\">preparing for Making Tax Digital now<\/a> if your business hasn\u2019t already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-payroll-year-end\"><strong>Payroll year end<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your business has employees then payroll will be one of the important business admin tasks that you have to deal with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And with that is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/payroll-year-end\/\">payroll year end<\/a>, where you need to report to HMRC on the previous tax year (which ends on 5 April), prepare for the new tax year and get P60s to your employees by the end of May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By putting your planning in place early, not only can you get your payroll year end sorted but you can also make sure you\u2019re staying on top of your payroll and paying your staff on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-year-s-business-resolutions-for-2019\"><strong>New year\u2019s business resolutions for 2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having plans in place for these business challenges will help your company as you approach each one. And while these will be big focuses, there will no doubt be other areas that you will look to tackle, such as finding new customers while retaining existing ones, scaling your business, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/late-payments-rules\/\">dealing with late payments<\/a> and managing your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/reduce-admin-grow-business\/\">business admin<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating business resolutions (as well as personal ones) will help you to tackle these challenges. I will be asking myself every morning what the important work I need to do today is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly to fall in love with the numbers and keep a keen eye on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numbers aren\u2019t my first love but keeping on top of my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/manage-your-cash-flow\/\">cash flow<\/a>, managing my money well and ensuring I am <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/making-tax-digital-checklist\/\">ready for Making Tax Digital<\/a> will give me peace of mind and help me to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/scale-your-business\/\">scale up<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly to take out time out quarterly to work on the business, not just in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, I took a couple of retreats that enabled me to take a step back and review how my business was doing and reconnect with the goals I had set at the beginning of the year. But even just mapping out your sales targets, your marketing activities and any challenges that lie ahead will be a big help to you in keeping the ship steady in the coming year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou should really think through if you are spending your time in the most productive way possible. For example, you might be spending a lot of time chasing new clients when actually you could upsell more to your existing ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOr there might be tasks relating to HR or accounts that are not only time consuming but give you a headache; these could easily be outsourced. Lastly, get some sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jeremy-corner-blue-eyed-sun-0\"><strong>Jeremy Corner, Blue Eyed Sun<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Figure out what pain in the world your product alleviates, understand how you are different from everyone else and sing about it in an engaging way that makes you stand out from the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<mark class=\"highlight-and-share\">Pay attention to the market, to cash flow and to sales, but don\u2019t let them drive your reason for being<\/mark>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Shine bright, contribute, engage and have fun. Work to live \u2013 don\u2019t live to work. I learned this early on in my career and it has served me well.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jenny-garrett-coach-speaker-and-trainer-0\"><strong>Jenny Garrett, coach, speaker and trainer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve your goals in 2019, I recommend you spend some time thinking about the areas of your business, such as staffing, cash flow, marketing, your product and your clients, and give yourself a score: 10 being you are doing an amazing job in this area, 1 being that it is neglected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve done that, you can see what you need to work on and what you need to maintain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps if you have a high turnover of staff, you need to spend some time understanding why. Maybe you need to improve the work environment, develop your staff or invest in some training for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or perhaps you want to have more staff but are struggling to afford it. Perhaps you could offer internships, work placements or apprenticeships, which have a shorter time commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an increasingly uncertain environment, finding creative solutions will be essential to your business success, so be open to doing things differently. What gets measured, gets done, so set stretch targets and measure yourself against them regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-antonia-chitty-family-friendly-working\"><strong>Antonia Chitty, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyfriendlyworking.co.uk\/\">Family Friendly Working<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA tip for retaining great staff in 2019: recruitment is important but retention of great staff saves you time and money. If you have issues with retention, make 2019 the time to ask your staff about what\u2019s important to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDevelop a strategy of interviewing those who leave too soon and assessing why they leave. <mark class=\"highlight-and-share\">Don\u2019t forget to ask great staff with long service what incentives keep them with your business<\/mark>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith this information in hand, re-examine your working practices and set yourself achievable targets for improved staff retention in 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-steve-johnson-graphite-web-solutions\"><strong>Steve Johnson, Graphite Web Solutions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It may sound obvious but without setting goals at the start of the year, how will you ever know how close you got to them? So, set the scene, define what your goals are and make sure they are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-based).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For example, while having a goal of increasing your revenue may seem reasonable, let\u2019s make it smart:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increase revenue by 20% \u2013 specific<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If 2018\u2019s revenue was \u00a3500k then 2019\u2019s needs to be \u00a3600k \u2013 measurable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you have the resources to increase work\/revenue by 20% \u2013 achievable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Last year, you increased revenue by 15% so this year increase by 20% \u2013 realistic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>January to December 2019, your revenue will be \u00a3600k \u2013 time-based<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;By defining this, it will help you reach your goal. Breaking this goal into 90 days or quarters will allow you to monitor progress towards that goal, therefore making it more achievable. Now we can monitor and review:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>31 March \u2013 revenue should be around \u00a3150k<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30 June \u2013 revenue should be around \u00a3300k<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30 September \u2013 revenue should be around \u00a3450k<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>31 December \u2013 revenue should be \u00a3600k<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Now you have a schedule to help you achieve that goal and can break each quarter into, what you need to do to reach that target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For example, work out how many new customers you need. Then set the process to gain those new customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;And consider how many customers need to renew. Look at how many normally renew and come up with strategies to increase that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Think about who is responsible for each element. Ensuring the right people own the relevant elements will help you reach your target.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-joanne-dewberry-joannedewberry-co-uk\"><strong>Joanne Dewberry, <a href=\"http:\/\/joannedewberry.co.uk\/\">JoanneDewberry.co.uk<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Get yourself an accountability group.&nbsp;The best way to reach your goal is to share them with others, people who will support and guide you to your end result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Setting up or joining an accountability group is the best way to actually turn your dreams into tangible goals.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-final-thoughts-on-new-year-s-business-resolutions\"><strong>Final thoughts on new year\u2019s business resolutions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While new year\u2019s resolutions can be a bit of fun \u2013 and perhaps not kept past the end of January (three times a week at the gym, anyone?), setting them for your business (and keeping them) can make a big difference to your company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So take some time out, think about what you want to achieve in 2019, consider the challenges that your business will face and work out how you\u2019ll tackle them.
