Fuelled by digital transformation and Industry 4.0, manufacturers are overhauling their processes across product innovation and through the supply chain with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/lack-of-traceability-reputation\/\">traceability.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shift from products to services and the need to bypass traditional sales channels to exploit the value-added activities of the digital economy are blurring the lines between industry players and contributing to the formation of business ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/industry\/process-manufacturing\/\">process manufacturing<\/a> \u2013 including players in food and drink, chemicals, metals, and pulp and paper \u2013 this change is particularly pronounced, where the digital mission is centred around collaborative innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Sage research, this process manufacturing focus on technology is fuelled by developments in international trade and the globalisation of markets, with 64% of US, Canadian and UK process manufacturers affected by Brexit and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) uncertainty, 49% by Brexit only, and 41% by USMCA disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This regulatory disruption increases supply chain complexity, creating problems for process manufacturers. Brexit, for example, means trading in other countries has become more complicated. Therefore, you need to focus on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tariff exposure and other costs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compliance \u2013 irrespective of any deals made (such as free trade agreements between the UK and the European Union or the US and China) or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/post-brexit-future-business\/\">no-deal Brexit<\/a> (and the transition to World Trade Organisation rules) goods will need to be declared, with custom procedures applied and opportunities for tax\/duty planning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relationships with suppliers \u2013 if you rely on certain components, understanding whether you&#8217;ll continue to get them will be a priority as lead times may increase.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The security of customer relationships and the effect on demand volume, contract terms, pricing and rebates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The potential loss of research and development grants, and the impact on product marketing and procurement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re a British process manufacturer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/prepare-for-brexit-food-drink\/\">Brexit preparations<\/a> should have made it a priority to examine your supply chain closely, taking care to understand where delays may potentially hit your business and asking suppliers about their own plans for regulatory disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research also says that instead of tightening their purses in these unpredictable times, process businesses in your industry are investing in new technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re already investing in strong, digitised global trade and supply chain solutions, which means those who don&#8217;t could be caught short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"#gate-c46961d4-dc35-4631-9bf8-4530317cf987 \">Download your free copy of Riding the wave of uncertainty: How process manufacturers are planning for a brighter future<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-technology-should-process-manufacturers-focus-on\">What technology should process manufacturers focus on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you expand your operations internationally, your commercial pressures and expectations are likely to increase. This puts strain on the supply chain, and by using information to manage quality, inefficiency and the threat of recalls, traceability is vital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You often need to follow international standards controlling quality and traceability, which impacts the sourcing of raw materials. In process manufacturing, tracing what goes into products in what can be long and complex supply chains is crucial, as any contamination can result in serious issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s important to understand the difference between &#8220;tracking&#8221; and &#8220;tracing&#8221;, as they are often confused with each other:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tracking focuses on progression.<\/strong> It occurs when you can see how parts progress from one sequence to the next, and how they move through the manufacturing process through location data. Internally, you can see where parts are, who&#8217;s worked on them, and how long until they&#8217;re finished.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tracing focuses on authentication.<\/strong> It allows you to, for example, identify the origin or a part through records and supply chain visibility. With data such as certifications of origin and purchase order numbers, products can be linked to their sources in the supply chain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tracing is more difficult than tracking. Tracking can fall under the responsibility of one company but tracing needs many of the businesses involved in the supply chain to comply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tracing can show whether a product is what it claims to be, which is important in industries such as pharmaceutical manufacturing where counterfeit products can cause serious problems. As well as providing authenticity, tracing can also provide accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With food and drink manufacturing, product traceability is more than just a trend \u2013 it&#8217;s the ability for the customer to make the right product choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For consumers, the difference between vegan, vegetarian and nut\/gluten\/shellfish-free food is not only about taste, it can be a matter of life or death. Traceability gives manufacturers the security of a healthy brand, healthy customers and healthy profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traceability provides you with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Real-time visibility into the status of all processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Automatic notifications that allow your business to be more informed, allowing you to react to events such as non-compliance or demand triggers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to report and share product and materials data with your suppliers and customers, allowing them to understand where materials came and where they went.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the visibility afforded by traceability, you can significantly improve your operation. Compliance issues can lead to unhappy customers, damaged reputations and significant fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traceability helps to avoid those problems, leading to a capability that is particularly important for process manufacturers \u2013 the ability to recall products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the right information, you can promote efficiency and improve decision-making through traceability. Using labelling technology such as radio-frequency identification (RFID) and quick response (QR) codes allows data to be collected that tracks a product&#8217;s full journey through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/blockchain-traceability-supply-chain\/\">supply chain<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anything can be recorded, from the status during transport to the source of materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-big-data-analytics\">2.
