As for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/accounting-software\/invoicing\/\">invoicing<\/a> and payment process, well, that\u2019s an afterthought. All that matters is getting the money, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">Yet making the customer experience good as possible when it comes to dealing with invoices and payments is really important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">Your customers will be happy and more likely to use your business again if they can settle their bill quickly and easily. More importantly, you might find you get paid more quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">This will have obvious benefits for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/manage-your-cash-flow\/\">cash flow<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">Add to this the fact that the payment processes of small businesses are often full of little, almost invisible, inefficiencies that eat up time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/sage-business-cloud\/accounting\/features\/invoicing\/\">generating invoices<\/a> takes up 14.2% of the average company\u2019s admin time, according to recent research by Sage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">Once you factor in the time taken to deliver those invoices, check they\u2019ve been paid, and follow up on the 45% of invoices that aren\u2019t paid within 30 days, that time adds up further still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-customer-experience-to-avoid\">A customer experience to avoid<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">Suppose you went into a store. You take something from the shelf. But there\u2019s a problem. There\u2019s no price label. Well, OK, maybe that doesn\u2019t matter. You can guess the price and it shouldn\u2019t be too expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">But there\u2019s then another problem. You can\u2019t find the checkout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">You search up and down the aisles. After a few minutes, you find it buried at the back of the store in a dark corner. There\u2019s nobody manning it. As you wait and tap your foot, a staff member shuffles over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">There\u2019s then another problem. You want to pay using your debit card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">The staff member slowly shakes his head and points to a sign behind him that you hadn\u2019t seen until now \u2013 cash only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">You dig around in your pockets before dashing out to the car and grab some loose coins. You\u2019ve just enough. You get back inside, and hand over the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">The staff member starts shuffling away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">\u201cHey, what about a receipt?\u201d you ask. Offer your customers different payment methods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">If your customers have to pay their invoices in a way that feels unnatural or unfamiliar to them, they might decide to sort it out later when they\u2019ve got a quiet moment to work through the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">Unfortunately, that moment may not occur as other pressing issues take priority \u2013 and the outcome is they forget all about your invoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">By offering flexible payment options, the right software lets clients pay in the way that\u2019s fastest, easiest, and most convenient for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">That means faster payments, fewer forgotten invoices, and less time following up on missed payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">Some providers will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/sage-business-cloud\/accounting\/features\/invoicing\/integrate-invoice-payments\/\">integrate your invoices directly with your payment system<\/a>, so that customers can pay on credit or debit card direct from your invoice in a matter of clicks, instead of spending extra time digging out bank details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">Sage\u2019s research shows that, while customers take an average of 35 days to make payments by cash, cheque, or bank transfer, \u2018pay now\u2019 buttons on invoices or phone payments reduce that to just 20 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">That means more money in the bank for you, and less time making those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/awkward-conversations-get-invoices-paid\/\">awkward phone calls<\/a> to chase payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-automate-your-invoice-tracking-process\">2. Automate your invoice tracking process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">By setting up a system that automatically alerts you when invoices are received and paid, you\u2019ll know exactly which clients you need to chase and avoid wasting time combing through bank statements and comparing invoice numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">This also means that data on how, when and the amount customers pay you is automatically transferred and trackable within your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/sage-business-cloud\/accounting\/\">accounting software<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">You can even pre-empt which customers are likely to pay late and tailor their invoices accordingly. Software options such as <a href=\"https:\/\/uk-marketplace.sage.com\/en-GB\/apps\/97113\/satago\">Satago<\/a> can conduct an initial risk assessment of each customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">You can use that information to decide on a case-by-case basis how much credit you should offer, and then automatically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/late-payments-rules\/\">chase late payments<\/a> when they occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-create-accurate-invoices\">3. Create accurate invoices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">There are few things more stressful and time consuming than debating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/invoice-cheat-sheet\/\">accuracy of your invoices<\/a> with customers \u2013 or fixing errors in invoices that understandably arise from manual processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"SAGEBodyText\">It upsets your customers.
