The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/coronavirus\/\">coronavirus<\/a> (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted companies of all sectors and sizes, so the chance to revive operations and look to the future is a welcome shift for millions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While many businesses haven\u2019t been able to function as normal due to the pandemic, and tough decisions have been made, that hasn\u2019t stopped them from adapting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From finding new markets to pivoting and offering new products and services, businesses have sought to find fresh opportunities to reach customers and keep moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what does the future look like for SMEs in the UK? What challenges will they face and what steps will they take to overcome them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These questions and more are answered in a new research report by Sage \u2013 <strong>Survival, resilience and growth: Placing small businesses at the heart of the UK\u2019s economic recovery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We surveyed a diverse range of decision makers at 2,000 SMEs around the UK to find out what survival, resilience, recovery and growth will look like for businesses in the coming 12 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stories-of-resilience\">Stories of resilience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the report, business owners share their stories of resilience as their companies have adapted to the impact of coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jennifer Walker is the owner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesplitscreencoffee.co.uk\/\">Split Screen Coffee Company<\/a>. She had to mothball her business as a result of the pandemic \u2013 but things took a turn for the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She says: \u201cAfter reading about the cancelling of all my events [in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/split-screen-coffee-company-mothballing-business\/\">Sage Advice article<\/a>] the owner of my local zero-waste\/craft beer shop kindly asked if I would like to team up and provide coffee out of their high-street premises, meaning I could operate again \u2013 effectively saving my business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derrick Rowe is the owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpr-motorsport.com\/\">DPR Motorsport<\/a>. While his business also had to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/dpr-motorsport-weve-stalled-due-to-coronavirus-but-were-preparing-to-get-back-on-track\/\">mothball their operation<\/a> and utilise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/coronavirus-financial-support-business\/\">government support<\/a>, business planning was high up the agenda. As was looking for new opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says: \u201cWe have formed some significant new partner business relationships as a result of the changes caused by lockdown. For example, we have significantly stepped up our involvement in virtual motorsport.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Walker has seen positivity throughout her local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She says: \u201cThroughout lockdown, my village came together in a way I had never seen before. I believe it is in this new sense of community where the solution lies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-takeaways-from-the-report\">Key takeaways from the report<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve summarised some of the report\u2019s key takeaways below, notably the fact that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Resilience is going to be as important as growth to the recovery.\u00a0Not all SMEs, only 54%, are prepared for further potential shocks or challenges, including cash flow\/liquidity problems, disruptions in the supply chain, and legal and regulatory changes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>80% of businesses think that technology will be very or somewhat important in restarting their business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>33% of businesses are actively planning investment in technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Survival, resilience and growth report covers the following topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Green shoots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fightback begins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A fragile recovery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reshaping the workforce<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accelerating the transition to growth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The SME sentiment index<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recommendations for an enterprise-led recovery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-survival-resilience-and-growth-an-excerpt-from-the-report\">Survival, resilience and growth: An excerpt from the report<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lockdown restrictions have weighed heavily on the profitability of UK SMEs \u2013 82% of businesses reported making a profit in March, but this plummeted to 44% during April and May as companies have had to wrestle with fundamental changes to their operations and a precipitous drop in demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most businesses are still experiencing issues related to the outbreak, ranging from problems adapting to restrictions (65%) to reduced demand (44%), managing cash flow problems (39%) and supply chain disruption (32%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the tide is starting to turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>June saw an improvement in profitability \u2013 with 50% of SMEs&nbsp;expecting to turn a profit \u2013 and this trend is likely to continue in July as more significant steps are taken towards re-opening the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking forward, the picture improves further \u2013 but very gradually. Most SMEs believe they will be back in the black by the end of the year, and by June 2021, 75% of SMEs across all sectors predict that they will be making a profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, 32% believe they will be making a greater profit than before COVID-19 by this time&nbsp;next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the challenges SMEs are still facing, confidence seems high.
