Again, an area where the role of performance management is vital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leading-people-companies-are-doing-it-today\">Leading People Companies are doing it today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some forward-looking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/people-company-how-build-business-people-first\/\">People Companies<\/a> are already listening to their workforce and taking action to create and sustain a high-performance culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Pret a Manger, high weekly mystery shopping scores for a branch earn staff an extra \u00a31 an hour, for every hour they worked the previous week. Financial perks and public celebrations are only part of it, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, 80% of Pret store managers started as trainees, sending a clear message to the workforce about how much the organisation values its people, through actively recognising their potential and ambition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer reports that 85% of HR leaders plan to increasingly develop and promote from within \u2013 because in today\u2019s competitive talent market, it soon won\u2019t be possible to buy in the high calibre people we need in many industries and areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-embed-a-performance-management-process-designed-to-motivate\">Embed a performance management process designed to motivate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staying close to employee needs and delivering great experiences and recognition in response holds the key to an engaged, productive workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong, motivating and effective performance management process fuels this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We ran a webinar with SHRM (a professional human resources membership association) recently, looking at best practice among leading employers and People Companies to identify five ways to reinvent performance management to achieve productivity and talent goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what we found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"#gate-545e8389-80aa-478a-ab0d-21960ee0b3bc\">Download your free guide, 6 ways to create amazing workforce experiences<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-set-clear-expectations\">1. Set clear expectations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People need to know what they\u2019re doing so they can work towards a clear set of goals.&nbsp;Make sure the goals are clearly expressed and understood by manager and employee. Keep it simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salesforce grew from a backroom startup with a goal-setting principle it still uses today: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/how-to-create-alignment-within-your-company.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the V2MOM<\/a>. It\u2019s a document that spells out what to do, why to do it and what\u2019s most important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-collaborate\">2. Collaborate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collaborate with 360 feedback and peer recognition from people who work as a team every day on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A range of feedback minimizes bias. Make sure there\u2019s follow-up in the shape of recognition (potentially public), discussion of development plans and a continuous feedback process rather than a one-off hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep the feedback questionnaires easy and simple and focused on performance and behaviour, not the individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-encourage-self-evaluation\">3. Encourage self-evaluation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Encourage self-development and assessment, so employees have their say, too. Give employees the opportunity for self-improvement by setting their own goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enable two-way feedback so employees can give feedback about the organisation, processes and managers \u2013 so issues can be identified and fixed before they create disengagement and apathy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And reinforce achievements since the last review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-make-feedback-continuous-and-sustainable\">4. Make feedback continuous and sustainable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it\u2019s too long to wait to quarterly reviews to praise people for their hard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find channels for continuous feedback that are easy to use, so the feedback process is quick and achievable for busy managers and staff and provides a real-time picture of performance and attainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-employee-development-don-t-just-think-act\">5. Employee development: Don\u2019t just think \u2013 act<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t just write a development plan, make it happen.
