On the other hand, food and drink businesses need stock and premises, so have higher startup costs too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompanywarehouse.co.uk\/blog\/what-is-the-average-startup-budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey<\/a> by The Company Warehouse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most creative and tech founders start a business with \u00a31,000 or less.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finance and recruitment companies spend most, often launching with more than \u00a310,000 in savings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food and property entrepreneurs tend to start a business with \u00a35,000 to \u00a310,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most consultancy and events firms start out with \u00a31,000 to \u00a35,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other sectors such as retail, leisure or health have a fairly even spread across budget brackets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-anchor-link\">How much is needed to start a business in the UK?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting a business in the UK usually costs \u00a31,000\u2013\u00a310,000, depending on sector, setup, and whether premises or staff are needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, we can calculate some of the common categories of startup expenses to give you a rough estimate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can then use this information and a little of your own research to work out how much to save.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"costs-anchor-link\"><strong>What are the typical estimated costs for a new startup?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical startup costs often include equipment, registration, workspace, inventory, and marketing, with upfront costs often starting from \u00a31,000+.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get out a pen and some paper, open a new tab on your internet browser and start researching the following costs for your business idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Equipment costs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about all the equipment that will be necessary for you to run the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes computers, tools, machinery, stationery, desks and chairs, point of sale systems, card terminals and any other hardware needed to be operational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rough estimate:<\/strong> \u00a3300 &#8211; \u00a32,000 up front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Registration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to tell the government that you are launching a new business. You can choose to structure the business as a sole trader, partnership or limited company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former two structures are completely free but come with a little extra risk as if something went wrong, you\u2019d be personally liable to pay for the damages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A limited company is its own entity, meaning the company and its assets could be sued if something goes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might also pay less tax in this way (an accountant or tax adviser would be able to offer the advice you\u2019d need here).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting up a limited company online costs just \u00a312, although many people get a company formation specialist to do the paperwork for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rough estimate:<\/strong> \u00a30 &#8211; \u00a3100 up front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Workspace<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The costs of a business workspace depend on your sector and location as well as the type of set-up you prefer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Work from home:<\/strong> This is suitable for many service businesses and virtually cost-free.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Office space:<\/strong> Prices vary dramatically around the country. You <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsh.co.uk\/total-office-cost-survey\/metrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can expect to pay<\/a> around \u00a320\/month per square foot in Newcastle upon Tyne, for example, whereas office space in central London can cost four times that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Retail space:<\/strong> Retail rents also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/321066\/annual-rental-cost-of-prime-retail-rents-in-the-united-kingdom-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vary<\/a> around the country. London\u2019s West End is extremely expensive \u2013 expect to pay more than \u00a3180 per square foot per month. However, elsewhere in London and much of the rest of the country, you\u2019ll pay between \u00a310 &#8211; \u00a320 per square foot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rough estimate:<\/strong> \u00a30 &#8211; \u00a35,000 per month plus deposit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Budget \u00a350 &#8211; \u00a3200 per month<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Printing fliers: <\/strong>For delivery or handing out at events, or even door to door. Expect to pay \u00a325 and up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Utilities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This covers electricity, heating, phone and internet bills, and anything else. If you run a retail or hospitality business, you\u2019ll have to pay business rates, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rough estimate:<\/strong> \u00a360 to \u00a3200 per month.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Insurance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting your business insured gives you peace of mind in case anything goes wrong. This includes liability insurance, which pays out if you get taken to court, as well as sickness insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In certain industries (such as construction), contracts often stipulate that you must have public liability insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rough estimate:<\/strong> \u00a30 &#8211; \u00a350 per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Tax, accounting and legal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s possible to do a lot of business administration yourself. Payroll<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re planning on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/guide-to-employing-the-perfect-person\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employing people<\/a>, you\u2019ll have to pay them a salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on their experience and whether they work part time or full time, this cost can vary a lot.
