Paying employees one or two days later would solve that situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it may not make it any more acceptable to employees, says Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Missing payroll could create trouble with HMRC as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/real-time-information-rti-the-basics\/\">Real-Time Information (RTI)<\/a> rules, you must submit payroll reports on or before your employees&#8217; payday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Failure to do so incurs penalties. For faster and more accurate submissions, you can use our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/payroll-software\/auto-enrolment\/\">auto enrolment software<\/a>, ensuring guaranteed payroll compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"miss-anchor-link\">Why businesses miss payroll<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two of the main reasons employers miss payroll deadlines are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insufficient funds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mistakes in the payroll process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insufficient funds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest challenges for businesses struggling to pay employees comes from cash flow problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are numerous reasons why firms might find it difficult to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/cash-flow-emergency-business\/\">stay on top of their cash flow<\/a>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Late payments from clients or suppliers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New equipment being bought without accounting for the need to cover salaries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Money spent to fulfil an order but the sales fail to materialise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The need to cover a hefty tax bill, meaning the business is left short of funds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rising prices to cover, such as the increase in fuel and energy costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"single-cta\">\n\t<a\n\t\tclass=\"button button--primary gate-e8fae86a-9444-4657-a009-eba49287d7fd\"\n\t\trole=\"button\"\n\t\tdata-button-location=\"content_area\"\n\t\thref=\"#gate-e8fae86a-9444-4657-a009-eba49287d7fd\"\n\t>Get your free cash flow forecast template and use it to project how much cash will be flowing in and out of your business, and when<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mistakes in the payroll process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next problem covers mistakes around the payroll process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chloe Hughes says one reason companies often make payroll process mistakes is that they &#8220;hugely underestimate&#8221; what is involved with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/payroll-processing-key-things-hr\/\">running a payroll function<\/a> effectively, efficiently and accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Often, they rely on unqualified and unsuitably trained staff to run payroll,&#8221; she says. &#8220;This increases the risk of non-compliance and further issues down the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This has made a comprehensive understanding of payroll more important than ever \u2013 but that is difficult for businesses to navigate alone.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"avoid-anchor-link\">How to avoid missing payroll<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To avoid payroll deadline problems, always issue and collect invoices promptly, and plan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/cash-flow-forecasting-small-businesses\/\">forecast your cash flow<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The earlier you spot issues, the longer you have to resolve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrew Cowling, director at Cowling Business Consultancy, recommends using a cash flow forecasting app, which allows you to update data regularly, and plan scenarios, for example, &#8220;what if we delay this payment?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If cash is still scarce, prioritise your most important suppliers and delay payments to others where possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask landlords and HMRC for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/difficulties-paying-hmrc\">time to pay<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, consider other funding options such as short-term loans and speak to your bank or funders about extending their facilities, delaying payments, or restructuring your debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be sure you can pay back any loans because otherwise you could be building up more financial problems for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/late-payments-rules\/\">late payments<\/a> from clients are the problem, consider invoice financing, which includes factoring and discounting. They tend to be more understanding if you keep them updated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the problem is a mistake in your payroll process, identify how it occurred and when it will be rectified, and assure employees it won&#8217;t happen again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give them a timescale for payment.
