How many potential successors have you identified for key roles?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without actionable insights from HR and&nbsp;People data, companies are flying blind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, just 40% of C-suite leaders say their organisation uses HR data to make business decisions,&nbsp;according to our recent research report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/sage-business-cloud\/people\/resources\/research-analyst-reports\/hr-in-the-moment-impact-through-insights\/\">HR in the moment: Impact through insights<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worryingly, despite&nbsp;94% of C-suite leaders&nbsp;having&nbsp;access to some form of People data, 68% said they\u2019re not heavily reliant on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"#gate-a37fa7ea-ea38-4c63-a74f-1f061404a164\">Request a free, live demo of Sage People and discover how it can help your organisation attract the best people, retain your key talent and increase productivity<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impact through insights: About our research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We polled 500 HR and C-suite leaders from across the UK, US, Canada, and Australia to find out more about how HR analytics are being used in organisations today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Respondents were drawn from two groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Senior HR roles, including chief people officers and HR directors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C-suite executive positions, including chief executives, chief financial officers, chief information officers and chief technology officers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Respondents were also from mid-size global companies, in traditionally high-growth, high-skill sectors such as technology, business services and not-for-profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results were fascinating. Below we cover what we learned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#hr-anchor-link\">1. HR are aligned to business priorities \u2013 but aren\u2019t leading them enough<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#theres-anchor-link\">2. There\u2019s an abundance of HR data \u2013 but not enough insights<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#leading-anchor-link\">3. Leading and lagging metrics: There\u2019s a lack of future-focused data provided by HR<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#csuite-anchor-link\">4. C-suite leaders know what HR data they want<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#and-anchor-link\">5. HR and C-suite leaders aren\u2019t using HR analytics to drive business decision-making<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#the-anchor-link\">6. HR are aligned to business priorities \u2013 but aren\u2019t leading them enough<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that an overwhelming majority (81%) of the C-suite feel HR\u2019s priorities are aligned to those of the overall business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top priorities cited by both HR and C-suite leaders include financial performance, a focus on leadership, business operations and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/digital-transformation-hr-secret-tips\/\">digital transformation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are some important distinctions, however, when it comes to who\u2019s actually leading the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than half (59%) of the C-suite feel HR is failing to play a leading role in delivering business priorities, even in key HR areas such as skilling and upskilling, operational excellence, and company culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s perhaps even more surprising is that HR leaders themselves agree they could be doing more to lead in these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems C-suite leaders expect HR to lead, more than HR do themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"theres-anchor-link\">2. There\u2019s an abundance of HR data \u2013 but not enough insights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An impressive 90% of business leaders say they do have access to some form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hr-analytics-how-to-skill-train\/\">People data<\/a> from HR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s not so great, though, is that this information isn\u2019t turning into actionable insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, 60% of C-suite aren\u2019t using HR data to drive any kind of decision making, and 68% subsequently say they\u2019re not heavily reliant on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, 60% of the C-suite are not using People data to help determine financial objectives and 63% aren\u2019t using it to make recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps most surprisingly, 56% aren\u2019t using any People data to help inform culture and experience decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why isn\u2019t data being used to drive impact?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking closer, we discovered the type of HR data the C-suite is receiving is typically weighted towards more \u2018lagging\u2019 metrics, than \u2018leading\u2019 metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, the data is backwards- rather than forwards-looking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"#gate-78eb6026-e1ee-4230-a125-c80b4afc3595\">Download your free copy of HR in the moment: Impact through insights<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"leading-anchor-link\">3. Leading and lagging metrics: There\u2019s a lack of future-focused data provided by HR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lagging metrics are outputs from events, with data showing what\u2019s already happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re useful if you want to understand if certain intended results have been achieved, but not so useful for predicting future trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, lagging metrics include metrics such as revenue earned and vacation days taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leading metrics, on the other hand, include data points such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hr-leaders-employee-engagement-change\/\">employee engagement<\/a> and satisfaction levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This data can be much more useful for business leaders because it acts like a warning system, allowing organisations to take preventative action and course correct in real time to meet business objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With 70% of HR leaders acknowledging they don\u2019t provide leading metrics to the C-suite, HR is missing a big opportunity to make a measurable impact on the success of the wider organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"csuite-anchor-link\">4. C-suite leaders know what HR data they want<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we asked C-suite leaders objectively about what information they would find most valuable for informing their decisions, the responses clearly backed up the usefulness of leading metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also demonstrates the gap between what data C-suite executives want from HR and the data they\u2019re getting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, 90% of the C-suite would find new hire failure rate data useful, yet only 14% report HR providing this data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, 86% of the C-suite say employee net promoter scores (NPS) would be invaluable \u2013 but only 13% currently get this information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even when it comes to more foundational leading metrics, such as employee engagement, 93% of the C-suite would find it helpful \u2013 but only 25% are being given access to it by HR and People teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top data points C-suite leaders said they would find useful are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Headcount<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employee productivity rate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cost per hire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HR to full-time employee (FTE) ratio<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training rates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employee engagement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Revenue per full-time employee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turnover rates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Labour costs per full-time employee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cost per employee<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metrics such as these give the leadership team the power to identify problems before they happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if employee satisfaction rates are low, productivity is likely to be low too, which is a signal ahead of time that there\u2019s a potential risk of lowered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/how-to-use-employee-recognition-to-drive-engagement\/\">employee retention<\/a> and higher staff turnover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"#gate-78eb6026-e1ee-4230-a125-c80b4afc3595\">Download your free copy of HR in the moment: Impact through insights<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"and-anchor-link\">5. HR and C-suite leaders aren\u2019t using HR analytics to drive business decision-making<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, raw data by itself isn\u2019t much use \u2013 there must be a level of understanding to interpret the information in meaningful ways that create actionable insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than half (59%) of HR leaders told us they don\u2019t have the ability to spot trends that help make future people-related decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, 38% of the C-suite say they\u2019re not fully satisfied with HR\u2019s ability to provide insights and make business-related recommendations, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This indicates a need for investment in training and education to help HR to develop critical insights and provide valuable recommendations to inform strategic decision making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-anchor-link\">6.
