HMRC grants it after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/apply-for-an-exemption-from-making-tax-digital-for-income-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">considering an application<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can apply for both MTD for VAT and MTD for Income Tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are already digitally excluded from MTD for VAT and your circumstances have not changed, contact HMRC to confirm whether the same exclusion applies to MTD for Income Tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-is-digital-exclusion-the-same-as-exemption\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is digital exclusion the same as exemption?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exclusion is not the same as exemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain people are exempt from Making Tax Digital, including charitable trustees, trustees of non-registered pension schemes, and Lloyd&#8217;s underwriters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exemptions are applied automatically, so there is no need to apply to HMRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/apply-for-an-exemption-from-making-tax-digital-for-income-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publishes the list of exempt people<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a full breakdown of who qualifies and how to apply, read <a
