One such obligation is to provide all employees on the payroll with a P60.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/real-time-information-rti-the-basics\/\">P60<\/a> shows how much tax an employee has paid during the tax year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This document summarises the total pay and deductions made by every employee in any given tax year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-must-a-p60-be-issued-to-employees\">When must a P60 be issued to employees?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As an employer, you must give a P60 to each employee who was working for you on 5 April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be supplied on paper or electronically and must be provided by 31 May. This is one part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/payroll-year-end\/\">payroll year end<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will allow enough time to check the details before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/file-a-tax-return-online\/\">filing a tax return<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-p60-used-for-by-employees\">What is a P60 used for by employees?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees need their P60s to prove how much tax they\u2019ve paid on their salaries and make any claims, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Claiming back overpaid tax<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applying for tax credits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As proof of income if applying for a loan or a mortgage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>P60s include details of earnings and deductions including National Insurance contributions and tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are important elements required by employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happens-if-a-p60-is-not-provided\">What happens if a P60 is not provided?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure to deliver P60s on time may lead to a fine from HMRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If employers don&#8217;t provide their employees with their P60s by the May deadline, they should aim to do so as soon as possible after that point to reduce the chance of being fined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the topic of penalties, HMRC can charge \u00a3300 initially if P60s are issued late, with \u00a360 added every day until the documents are sent to the employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if there&#8217;s a genuine error on the part of the employer, and they move to get the P60s to their employees as quickly as possible, the chance of receiving a fine will be reduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-your-provide-employees-with-a-p60\">How do your provide employees with a P60?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/sage-business-cloud\/payroll\/\">Payroll software<\/a> can be used to generate and manage P60s online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees can easily and securely access their P60s (as well as their payslips) online, using a mobile phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s also possible for employers to order copies of the P60s from HMRC. However, unlike using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/payroll-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">payroll software<\/a>, they can take up to seven days to arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-i-need-a-p60-if-i-am-self-employed\">Do I need a P60 if I am self-employed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone classed as a sole traders doesn&#8217;t need a P60 as they don&#8217;t draw a salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a different case for those who run a limited company.
