How MTD ITSA will affect you

Both you and your clients need to use MTD compatible software to submit tax returns and store digital records. While this brings challenges across workflows for accountants and bookkeepers, by using Sage Accounting, you can easily meet key requirements and leave no clients behind.

  • Go Digital: Record, sort and report for Self Assessment preparation. The new Individual plans from Sage Accounting mean you can throw away the shoebox and get your clients to keep digital records on the go.
  • Send periodic updates: With client records digitised you can easily send a summary of income and expenses to HMRC every quarter for each source of business income.
  • Declare annual income: Send an End of Period Statement (EOPS) for each source of business income and submit a Final Declaration (FD) to complete your client’s Self Assessment

Sage Accounting including the new Individual plans is available through Sage for Accountants – the platform for managing both client and practice subscriptions, recognised by HMRC as MTD ITSA compatible.

MTD for accountants FAQs

You can still use Excel spreadsheets to calculate VAT but you won’t be fully compliant with MTD. VAT returns have to be submitted through MTD-compatible software like Sage Accounting or using bridging software that creates a link between spreadsheets and HMRC’s systems.
Making Tax Digital is HMRC legislation is designed to make it easier for tax payers to get their taxes right. By complying with MTD legislation and adopting compatible software for your practice and clients you’ll be able to easily view tax information in one place and complete taxes more efficiently.

The first phase of MTD started in April 2019, mandating that most VAT registered businesses with taxable turnover over £85,000 keep digital tax records. In April 2022 MTD for VAT was extended to all VAT registered businesses, including those below the VAT threshold.

There are two upcoming dates to take note of:

April 2026: MTD for ITSA will be mandated for sole traders and landlords with an income of more than £50,000.

April 2027: MTD for ITSA. MTD for ITSA will be mandated for sole traders and landlords with an income of between £30,000 and £50,000
