And it was this perfect confluence of financial insight and entrepreneurial experience that in turn led him to found <a href=\"https:\/\/flinder.co\/\">flinder<\/a> in 2017. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>At flinder, Barlow mentors ambitious, growing businesses from startups to those generating a turnover of \u00a350m (\u20ac60m) to help them achieve growth. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We asked him to share his top tips for some of the thorny financial issues facing small businesses in year one of starting up.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-your-advice-for-deciding-between-getting-a-loan-or-getting-investment-for-startup-costs\"><strong>What is your advice for deciding between getting a loan or getting investment for startup costs?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, there are other options for funding startup costs, so it\u2019s not that binary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also save up before launching your business and not take a salary for a few months. If you are manufacturing products, you can leverage supplier credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately it depends on your vision for the business, your existing resources, and your risk appetite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-will-a-bank-or-investor-expect-to-see-as-a-demonstration-of-finances\"><strong>What will a bank or investor expect to see as a demonstration of finances?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be able to show you know your numbers and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-ie\/blog\/cash-flow-crisis-avoid\/\">cash flow<\/a>. That\u2019s simple for an accountant to say, but this can be foreign for someone just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-gb\/blog\/how-to-start-a-small-business\/\">starting a business<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve seen many financially educated individuals get business finances completely wrong because they don\u2019t understand accounting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re unsure, speak with an expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-soon-can-an-entrepreneur-expect-to-pay-themselves-a-salary\"><strong>How soon can an entrepreneur expect to pay themselves a salary?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your cash flow will determine this. How soon you can pay yourself a salary depends on your business model, your funding, and how quickly you can monetise your offering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beware, though, that you probably won\u2019t earn the type of salary you want right away. It takes time to build up to a comfortable salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-should-entrepreneurs-start-thinking-about-employing-staff\"><strong>When should entrepreneurs start thinking about employing staff?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I say you should start planning for this immediately if your ambition is to grow your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suggest you design your target operating model \u2014 the future structure of your business \u2014 and a high-level organisational structure in the early stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to know what you\u2019re aiming for and figure out your strategy for getting there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"#gate-6403c820-b6b5-4d8c-bcbc-7b0e39c6a523\">Download your free side hustle toolkit, comprising a side hustle guide, business plan template and cash flow forecast template<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-will-a-small-business-owner-know-when-they-need-an-accountant-s-help\"><strong>How will a small business owner know when they need an accountant\u2019s help?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s simple: you will always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-ie\/blog\/how-to-choose-an-accountant\/\">need an accountant\u2019s help<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as you wouldn\u2019t operate on yourself if you needed surgery, you should save yourself the trouble and hire an expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-most-important-figures-to-track-for-the-business-financial-health\"><strong>What are the most important figures to track for the business\u2019 financial health?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from cash and net profit, focus on leading indicators such as employee satisfaction, product feedback, and customer NPS (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Net_Promoter\">Net Promoter Score<\/a> is a measure of customer satisfaction).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soft factors like work\/life balance and quality of life are just as important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-can-entrepreneurs-get-better-at-managing-business-finances\"><strong>How can entrepreneurs get better at managing business finances?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of free webinars and training courses to learn basic bookkeeping and finance, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acca-x.com\/global\/en.html\">ACCA-X<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also join an entrepreneur group for guidance and references or speak to an expert that understands your business and aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-will-an-entrepreneur-know-when-it-s-time-to-make-their-side-hustle-a-supplementary-income-to-your-primary-job-a-sole-source-of-income\"><strong>How will an entrepreneur know when it\u2019s time to make their side hustle (a supplementary income to your primary job) a sole source of income?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having juggled a side hustle and a full-time job myself, you will never put enough effort or conviction to get it to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it doesn\u2019t need to\u2014you have another source of income on which to rely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My advice is if you\u2019re passionate enough and you think it has the potential, then jump in and do it properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have no other options, it must work.
