Case study

Intern case study: David Clark – Digital Infrastructure Intern

I am currently working within the Digital Infrastructure team which falls under marketing operations, whilst on my year out of university. I attend Northumbria University where I study Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence. Prior to starting university, I worked as a Quality Control Analyst at a large pharmaceutical company, however after 3 years in the role I wanted to change careers paths and follow something I was passionate about, technology. My course allowed for me to take a year out as a placement student, to test my knowledge that I have learnt on the course so far as well as gaining work experience. After applying to numerous positions, I decided on sage. With being from the Northeast I knew the stature of the company and over the hiring process got to know about the benefits working at sage brings.

Tell us about your role at Sage?

My role at sage falls under Marketing Technology and revolves around managing, collecting and analysing data from the company website. I work with stakeholders from across the business and globe to implement new marketing tags, as well as troubleshooting and debugging any data flow issues they have. The role allows me to be constantly testing my analytical and problem-solving skills whilst researching and learning new technologies.

What tips do you have for anyone thinking of applying?

Sage has a very clear and guided recruitment method and its great as an applicant that you are kept in the loop at every stage. Applying for a position as an intern is great as it gives you the same experience as applying for a regular role/graduate position. From my experience the early careers team are super helpful and just an email away if you have any questions about the role, the application process or just need some reassurance! Whilst at university I never really planned to do a placement year but thought I would look at opportunities that were available to me and after seeing the position at sage I couldn’t not apply!

How do you feel that this Internship will benefit you?

The experience this placement has given me is invaluable, the experience of working with real world data and new technologies has tested my knowledge and given me new ways to learn. All whilst collaborating with experts at the top of their field is something that, as a student, you very rarely get the chance to do outside of university. The year out of university has given me the confidence in my technical skills, as it can be easy to get comfortable at university but doing this placement year has tested my skills and allowed me to grow.

What do you enjoy the most about your role at Sage?

There are several things that I enjoy about my role within sage. I enjoy the responsibility that my team trust me with and enjoy working with them on different projects throughout the year and watching them expand and develop. I have also enjoyed being able to develop my skills, a big part of my team is learning new technologies and I love that my team are constantly pushing each other to learn more! Aside from the work aspect, I enjoy the social side too. The occasional meeting to chat about life and what is going on, meeting up for lunch and especially the discount Starbucks in the Newcastle office!
