company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, employees who are recognized for their jobs are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/advice\/employee-recognition-statistics\/\">six more times likely<\/a> to stay than those who aren\u2019t recognized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/advice\/employee-recognition-statistics\/\">yet 29% of employees<\/a>&nbsp;haven\u2019t received recognition for good work in more than a year, according to recent research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why\">Why does recognition matter?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing employees helps drive engagement and boosts morale, which in turn increases productivity. That\u2019s vital when productivity levels have been low for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appreciation is also a fundamental human need. It falls under the fourth level of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplypsychology.org\/maslow.html\">Maslow\u2019s hierarchy of needs<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 self-esteem. It\u2019s a degree of self-respect and respect from others which includes recognition, attention and appreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With engagement levels reportedly at an all-time low, building a culture of appreciation in your company is not only the right thing to do but also a smart business move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what\">What kind of appreciation do employees actually want?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.gallup.com\/businessjournal\/193238\/employee-recognition-low-cost-high-impact.aspx\">Gallup<\/a>, the most effective recognition is honest, authentic and individualized to how each employee wants to be recognized.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is to know what makes it meaningful and memorable for the employee, and who is doing the recognizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some ways you can recognize employees are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Public recognition or acknowledgment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private recognition from a manager, peer or customer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receiving or obtaining a high level of achievement through performance reviews<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promotion or increase in scope of work or responsibility to show trust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monetary reward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, who\u2019s going the extra mile and showing employees recognition all year-round? And how are they doing it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s four examples of employee appreciation at its best to help fuel some ideas of your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Airbnb shows appreciation through their product<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.co.uk\/\">Airbnb<\/a>, the online global platform that shares spaces for temporary rent, show appreciation to their staff by enabling them to live the Airbnb lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, it provides its people with a work-from-anywhere policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not unique to Airbnb especially since the pandemic, but this along with its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.perkupapp.com\/post\/7-awesome-airbnb-employee-benefits-perks-that-win-employees-over\">$2,000 stipend<\/a>&nbsp;means it can say thank you by enabling its people to go and see the world, while helping them to experience Airbnb from their customers\u2019 perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/podcasts\/the-journal\/why-airbnb-is-letting-employees-work-anywhere\/1cfaed2e-33bd-4487-93ee-d84004c3b38e\">Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky explains<\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019re only as good as the people we have, and we want the best people in the world. That was kind of where I started. We should be more flexible. Pleo offers employees the power to reward themselves<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a similar vein to Airbnb, Pleo, a company that helps businesses manage their expenses, rewards its employees using its own flexible technology as a way to thank its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each team gets&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pleo.io\/en\/flex-benefits\">\u20ac2,500 in their equivalent local currency<\/a>&nbsp;to buy their perks using their card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It could be something simple like buying more holiday time \u2013 or it could be that you want to take a cooking class that you\u2019ve never done before, or even hire a nanny so you can go out for dinner with your partner child-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis wasn\u2019t designed for a leader or to optimize for cost; it was designed as employee first, admin second,\u201d Pleo\u2019s Head of People, Jessie Danyi, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pleo.io\/en\/flex-benefits\">explains on their blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur goal was seeing employees loving it and being really excited about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rewarding your people in the way that suits them means they\u2019ll feel empowered to use that token of recognition in a way that they\u2019ll truly appreciate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Whole Foods shares its appreciation through transparency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mashed.com\/483690\/what-it-means-when-whole-foods-employees-are-voted-in\/\">Health food giant Whole Foods<\/a>&nbsp;takes transparency to a whole new level, giving employees votes on new hires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By building this practice into the business, it shows a level of recognition, appreciation and trust for your people who are already part of the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees are voted in after their first 90 days at the company with a two-thirds majority needed to keep an employee on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It appears to be a win-win for both current employees and new recruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/capitalbusiness\/at-whole-foods-a-survivor-like-ritual\/2012\/06\/22\/gJQAl9pC0V_story.html\">Mirian Alvarenga, a graphic artist at the Whole Foods Market explains<\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s actually really nice because it makes you feel like you have a say in what goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clare Bender, Marketing Team Leader at one of their stores, was hired using this process and says: \u201cIt makes you feel like you really deserve to be part of the team. Like everyone wants you to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Salesforce relies on tech for successful employee recognition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Customer relationship management company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/uk\/\">Salesforce<\/a>&nbsp;shows us that when it comes to employee recognition, sometimes the simplest ways are the best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salesforce use communications tool&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/intl\/en-gb\/help\/articles\/4417526920723-Recognise-coworkers-for-a-job-well-done\">Slack for peer-to-peer recognition<\/a>. It uses it to share when a colleague has done a good job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has badges for certain types of recognition that are displayed on peoples\u2019 profiles on Slack and custom badges are also made for colleagues who have made a big difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is something that everyone can get involved in, no matter where they work.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatplacetowork.com\/certified-company\/1000226\">90% of Salesforce employees say they love where they work<\/a>, so it might be simple but it\u2019s effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"it\">Why it should be Employee Appreciation Day every day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Employee appreciation shouldn\u2019t be just a day.
