In the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agc.org\/sites\/default\/files\/users\/user21902\/2025%20Construction%20Hiring%20and%20Business%20Outlook%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AGC report<\/a>, based on responses from over 11,000 general contractors, nearly 80% are already finding it difficult to find qualified workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is having a significant impact on worker quality, with over half of the respondents polled citing this as a top concern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also an issue that\u2019s putting pressure on existing teams and raising concerns around safety, productivity, and wellbeing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A change is needed that prioritizes investment in upskilling that, alongside a more targeted recruitment strategy, will enable contractors to create a resilient workforce for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1214\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/08\/Mar2025_Construction-Commerical_0461-1214x810.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32140\" style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/08\/Mar2025_Construction-Commerical_0461-1214x810.jpeg 1214w, https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/08\/Mar2025_Construction-Commerical_0461-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/08\/Mar2025_Construction-Commerical_0461.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1214px) 100vw, 1214px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-ripple-effects-of-a-workforce-lacking-key-skills\">The ripple effects of a workforce lacking key skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction\u2019s workforce challenges are intensified by tight margins and limited time, making it difficult for contractors to invest in upskilling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about challenges to technology adoption, 39% of the AGC\u2019s respondents say it\u2019s difficult to find the time to implement and run training on new technology, and 36% cite employee resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But without access to the right skills, you may have to turn down projects, face overruns because you\u2019re not able to work efficiently, or struggle to adopt new technologies, such as AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lack of skills development also impacts retention, as the workforce burns out or becomes disillusioned with their own lack of career progression. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction is estimated to be the third most burnout-prone industry, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/news\/2024\/05\/suicide-and-mental-health-challenges-in-the-construction-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">83% have struggled with mental health issues<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contractors are also losing skills earlier than other sectors in the US through older workers retiring earlier than planned because of the physical demands of the job. Only <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/O6bq0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20% of physical laborers are aged 55 or older<\/a>, compared to 44% of non-physical workers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These pressures present an urgent need to rethink your training to safeguard the workforce and boost overall project delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1176\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-164852768-1176x810.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20100\" style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-164852768-1176x810.jpg 1176w, https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-164852768-768x529.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-164852768.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1176px) 100vw, 1176px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-can-contractors-do-about-the-skills-shortage\">What can contractors do about the skills shortage?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Contractors need to make time to develop an education strategy to sit alongside recruitment efforts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are five steps you can take to help tackle the evolving skills crisis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Encourage ongoing training and digital upskilling<\/strong> within your existing workforce to improve capabilities while boosting morale and retention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If the talent isn\u2019t available in the market, grow it internally.<\/strong> Partner with vocational training providers to create apprenticeship programs tailored to your business needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Invest in AI-enabled tools<\/strong> to boost productivity and reduce physical strain\u2014especially for older workers. Use VR and AR to deliver immersive training experiences that build confidence before workers step on site.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Encourage job rotation and cross-training<\/strong> to diversify and broaden skillsets. This strengthens your workforce and can open recruitment opportunities beyond the traditional construction talent pool.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Retain older and experienced workers <\/strong>with flexible roles, mentorship opportunities, or phased retirement plans to combat construction\u2019s brain drain and support the next generation of workers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>With the right
