Expenses of operation or operating expenses are simply the costs incurred in order to keep the business running. These may include rent, utilities, wages paid to employees, COGS, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-us\/blog\/inventory-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inventory<\/a> and equipment costs \u2013 anything necessary to normal business operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To calculate operating income:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operating Income = Gross Income \u2013 (Operating Expenses + Depreciation)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The operating income definition differs from that of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-us\/blog\/glossary\/what-is-net-income\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">net income<\/a> in that operating income does not represent interest paid or collected, taxes, investments or specialized or one-time costs. Net income represents all business expenses, providing a more comprehensive view of a company\u2019s profitability.
