As the name implies, <\/span>just-in-t<\/span>ime (JIT) <\/span>inventory management<\/span><\/a> refers to having <\/span>the <\/span>right level of inventory available at the right time. This system was developed <\/span>in Japan in the 1970s when <\/span>Toyota sought to reduce inventory levels<\/span><\/a> to the absolute minimum by receiving items from suppliers just as the last of those items were being pulled from Toyota\u2019s warehouse shelves. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This system can make the manufacturing process more efficient by allowing a business to quickly scale production up or down depending on customer demand.  By keeping inventory levels low, a company can reduce its <\/span>working capital<\/span><\/a> needs and enhance its <\/span>cash flow<\/span><\/a>.  Low inventory also allows a business to avoid product waste due to damage or expiration.  <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, just-in-time <\/span>inventory management<\/span><\/a> does come with some risk.  It can leave a business vulnerable to supply chain disruptions that could unexpectedly halt production.  <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
