Just a few years ago I would have described the construction industry as reluctant to embrace information technology (IT). Today I believe that is changing. Superintendents, project managers, and service techs now regularly use mobile devices to file daily field reports, access project information and submit work orders and time sheets. Construction company executives are getting more strategic about IT, with nearly half of companies reporting they have a formal IT plan that is tied to business objectives. And construction marketers are highlighting their company’s use of technology as a way to get more business.
What is driving this change in attitude towards IT? There are many factors, including:
- Younger workers want it. It’s a given that any construction company hiring younger workers will feel the pressure to step up their technology game. These “digital natives” understand how to leverage technology and want to use it in their jobs. Technology has quickly become a key incentive to attracting young talent in a competitive labor market.
- Customers expect it. Project owners are looking for ways to reduce costs both during construction and after. Consequently, many owners prefer working with contractors who use technology to meet this cost-saving need.
- Competitive pressures require it. Small and medium-sized construction firms are taking advantage of new, lower cost technology options to level the playing field with larger companies.
- Profit margins demand it. Bottom line, contractors who effectively use technology can improve efficiency both in the field and the office, leading to lower costs and higher profit margins.
