Four things to look for in a technology partner

Selecting software for your construction company is a major decision. In past blog posts, we’ve talked a lot about the importance of having an IT strategy to assure you don’t end up with a mishmash of software that won’t work well together. We’ve also covered the capabilities you should expect from construction applications—whether you’re looking for document management software or a system to help with service calls.

One other important factor to consider in any software purchase is whether you are selecting the right technology partner. In other words, who is the company behind the software. Here are four things to look for when evaluating a software provider:

  1. Experience: How long has the company been providing software to the construction industry? Does the software vendor understand the special business needs of contractors like yourself? Also look for a company that has a history of guiding its customers though technology changes and knows where the software industry is heading next.
  2. Software adoption: Many software vendors claim to be the “number one” software. One of the best ways to cut through the hype is to determine how many contractors are actually using the company’s product. And don’t forget to do your own poll. Talk to other contractors in your area to see what products they’re using and how the software is working for them.
  3. Credibility: It also doesn’t hurt to get other third-party opinions. Has the software provider won awards? What do independent surveys say about the company’s products?
  4. Proven support: Ask about the support services you will receive as a customer and any metrics that show the level of service. For example: How quickly are customer questions resolved? And what is the company’s current customer satisfaction ratings for their support services?

Picking a technology partner is a lot like adding a new member to your management team—you want someone you trust will help make your business successful.
