And the situation is worse than one might think<\/mark>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sage\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-us\/blog\/late-payments-get-paid-faster\/\">\u2018Late Payments: The Domino Effect\u2019<\/a> study found that, in South Africa, 15% of invoices are paid late, and more than 88% of payments due to SMEs are either never made or are made so late that they\u2019re eventually written off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The knock-on effects of this are far-reaching. Small businesses can\u2019t pay their staff or suppliers and, to stay cash-flow positive, they\u2019re forced to use money that they\u2019ve put aside to grow their business to keep their doors open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there is one way that SMEs can guard against the effects of late payments, and that\u2019s to maximise their cash flow by cutting unnecessary expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-depend-on-a-single-customer\"><strong>Don\u2019t depend on a single customer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><mark class=\"highlight-and-share\">Try not to rely on one source for the majority of your income, especially if the customer often pays late. <\/mark>Another risk of this approach is that you\u2019ll take a massive financial knock when that customer no longer needs your services. A safer option is to draw your revenue from a handful of regular customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-let-admin-fall-by-the-wayside\"><strong>Don\u2019t let admin fall by the wayside<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Small businesses spend over two weeks following up on late payments, according to our research. This makes it easy to do business with you, which any customer will appreciate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tip: Consider offering discounts to customers who pay their accounts early, or in full, and be sure to check a customer\u2019s credit history before offering payment terms.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-build-a-relationship-with-your-bank\"><strong>Build a relationship with your bank<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Set up a credit facility with your bank <em>before<\/em> you need it. This not only lets you build up a solid credit history and negotiate better interest rates but also gives you instant access to funds when you need them most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-get-inventory-smart\"><strong>Get inventory smart<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having too little stock means you could miss out on a sale.
