renowned management consultant, once said: \u201cTime is the scarcest resource and, unless it is managed, nothing else can be managed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an aspiring small business owner, it\u2019s important to realise how pivotal effective time management is to the success of your future business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although time isn\u2019t a commodity, it still pays to treat it like a precious resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managing your time efficiently can not only result in you improving your productivity and preventing burnout, but it can also enable you to focus on more important business activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-starting-your-business-as-a-side-hustle\">Starting your business as a side hustle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For Joe Weir, a side hustle was a natural extension of a work relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy co-founder and I were successful brand consultants,\u201d says Joe, co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatthing.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">That Thing<\/a>, a London-based brand studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were just two colleagues teaming up on odd jobs. Our \u2018side hustle\u2019 involved taking on projects together in the evenings and at weekends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, John Popel\u2019s side hustle was birthed out of a gap he spotted in the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John is co-founder and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/grubmates.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grubmates<\/a>, a startup delivering food, groceries and medicine on the west coast of Mauritius, all within an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy wife, Olga, and I launched Grubmates as a pet project,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe needed a reliable, 24-hour delivery service, but it didn\u2019t exist on the island. So, we built one ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe and John agree that, when it comes to calculating how much time you should spend on your side hustle, there\u2019s no one-size-fits-all approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, the entrepreneurs suggest a more bespoke angle, which takes into account:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-your-business-goals\"><strong>1. Your business goals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your plan may be to go into full-time business as soon as possible, in which case you may want to dedicate more time to your side hustle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if going all-in with your business is your long-term goal, you can probably afford to devote less time to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-your-side-hustle\"><strong>2. Your side hustle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your side hustle is service-based, such as graphic design, you might need to work set hours on a regular basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrast this with a product-based side hustle, which typically allows you to have a more flexible work schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-your-personal-commitments\"><strong>3. Sustainable revenue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the income from your side hustle consistently exceeds your full-time pay packet, you may have a viable business on your hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-growth-capacity\">2. Growth capacity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have capital to recruit additional staff, broaden your range of products or services, or increase the scale of your operations?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If so, it may be advisable to commit to your business on a full-time basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-managing-your-time-in-business\">Managing your time in business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe believes delegation is integral to his time management strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI used to think the time costs of delegation outweighed the benefits, but that isn\u2019t true,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe time you invest delegating something properly doesn\u2019t just solve an immediate time pressure. It also builds your capacity for more efficient delegation down the line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, John highlights how important delegation and outsourcing were, particularly when he turned his side hustle into a full-time business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor a startup, finding the right match between founders and early team members can be a matter of life and death,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNevertheless, delegation is critical because startups focus on scaling, which can only be done with a team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a familiar trap many first-time founders fall into: believing they have to do everything for their startup to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the reverse is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective delegation saves time and frees you up to engage in more strategic thinking or higher value activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also empowers your team to make decisions, which boosts their morale and, ultimately, their productivity levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-using-tools-and-resources-to-maximise-your-time\">Using tools and resources to maximise your time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>John and Joe have adopted time management strategies devised by an ex-US President and a university student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John favours the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eisenhower.me\/eisenhower-matrix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eisenhower Matrix<\/a>, a time management tool developed by former US President Dwight D.
