Expenses of operation, or operating expenses, are simply the costs incurred in order to keep the business running. These may include rent, utilities, wages paid to employees, inventory and equipment costs \u2013 anything necessary to normal business operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-calculate-operating-income\">How to calculate operating income<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operating Income = Gross Income \u2013 (Operating Expenses + Depreciation)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The operating income definition differs from that of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage.com\/en-za\/blog\/glossary\/what-is-net-income\/\">net income<\/a> in that operating income does not represent interest paid or collected, taxes, investments or specialised or one-time costs. Net income represents all business expenses, providing a more comprehensive view of a company\u2019s profitability.
