Accrual is the accounting method associated with the matching principle of accounting. The matching principle requires that revenues and expenses are recognized in the same period irrespective of when cash is transferred. An accruals entry is performed to match revenue with expenses and vice versa. Accrual-based accounting fundamentally differs from cash-based accounting.
