8 simple ways to help you deal with change

Adapting to change is not an option—it’s essential for all businesses. Research shows that nearly 80% of businesses must adapt every two to five years to survive.

It’s not an easy task when faced with economic uncertainty, evolving market trends, consumer demands and technological advancements.

That’s not to mention our natural resistance to change, which is often compounded by a lack of clear vision, company culture and resource constraints. So how can we deal with the complexities of change better?

As the co-founder and CEO of Self Space, a fast-scaling contemporary mental health service, I’ve learned that while there are no quick fixes, everyday mental maintenance is an essential part of the process.

Here are some practical tips that can help ease the journey.

  1. Breathe
    Take a moment to focus on your breathing. Find a relaxed and comfortable position sitting on a chair or the floor and take 10 deep breaths from your belly. You will be in a much stronger position to accept what’s happening from this place of calm.
  2. Make time for reflection
    Keep a journal to express yourself without the pressure of an audience or outcome. Start by asking yourself about your experience of change and what you have learned. “When has change worked for me? How do I really feel about change? What have I learned from changes before?” Reflecting in this way will help you to stay grounded in the present moment.
  3. Practise change little and often
    Show yourself that change is possible by regularly adjusting and reflecting on your ability to adapt and thrive. Lead the business in proactive change, even if they seem unimportant, such as putting out new snacks in the kitchen or restructuring the Monday meeting. This approach will prepare your team to handle change more effectively
  4. Find stability in the eye of the storm
    Seek stability in other areas of your life during times of significant change. Keep familiar objects on your desk or take breaks at your favourite coffee shop. Treat yourself gently and with compassion, and remember that not everything in your business can or should change at once.
  5. Be open to change
    Regularly engage with your team and ask for their ideas on how you can improve and what changes they would make if they were leading the business. Embracing curiosity and a proactive attitude towards change will create a culture of continuous improvement and adaptation.
  6. Lead by example
    Show your team that change starts with you as a leader. Be open to feedback and be responsible for the evolving needs and demands of your business. By setting an example of your ability to adapt, you will inspire your team to do the same.
  7. Show up authentically
    You don’t have to pretend that dealing with change is easy. Instead, be genuine, vulnerable and honest about the challenges and uncertainties you are facing. By authentically sharing your experiences, you will create a sense of connection and support within your team.
  8. Respond to change, but don’t go overboard
    You don’t need to have all the answers. But you do need to be able to respond when change happens. Prioritise your wellbeing, establish routines and set boundaries so that you are mentally and emotionally equipped to face change when it happens.

There are no one-size-fits-all solutions to deal with change. However, incorporating these tips and prioritising everyday mental maintenance can help you not just survive, but thrive in the ever-changing business world.
