What is the Climate Change Act?
The Climate Change Act is a piece of legislation committing the UK government, by law, to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 100% of 1990 levels (net zero) by 2050. Every 5 years, The Act requires the government to set a “carbon budget” and produce a Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA). The CCRA assesses current and future risks to the UK from climate change and feeds into the development and updating of the UK National Adaptation Programme (NAP) sets the actions that government and others will take to adapt to the challenges of climate change in the UK. It sets out key actions for the next 5 years.
