What is a carbon budget?

A carbon budget is an estimate of the maximum amount of carbon dioxide (CO₂) that can be released into the atmosphere over a period whilst keeping global warming within a certain temperature threshold. The carbon budget takes into consideration the accumulation and breakdown of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere over time.
