What is Making Tax Digital for VAT?

Glossary definition

What is Making Tax Digital for VAT?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT is government legislation that means anybody who’s registered for VAT must use MTD-compatible software to:

  • Keep and maintain digital records relating to their VAT accounting.
  • Submit VAT Returns.

They must also ensure VAT accounting systems and software are digitally linked.

MTD for VAT was introduced in phases beginning in 2019, so didn’t immediately apply to all those registered for VAT.

However, this changed as of 2022, and now it is the default (and only) legally-acceptable way to do your VAT accounting.
