What is Net-Zero?

Glossary definition

What is Net-Zero?

“Net zero” refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gases produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. To achieve “net zero”, the amount of GHG emissions produced must be no higher than the amount removed from the atmosphere, e.g., when anthropogenic (man-made) GHG emissions reach 0, or are balanced by carbon removals. Absolute global net zero CO2 refers to the ultimate target end state relative to the whole earth. The current global agreement on this, as set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement, highlights the need to achieve net zero before the second half of this century.
