What are upstream and downstream emissions?

1 min read

Upstream emissions are the indirect emissions related to a business’s suppliers and the creation of its products or services. Upstream emissions include purchased materials, the transportation of these to the business, and the products and services a business uses, as well as emissions from employee travel and commuting.

Downstream emissions are the indirect emissions related to a business’s customers, and the distribution, storage, use, and disposal of its products or services. Downstream emissions also include emissions related to a business’s investments.
