About Sage

How we started
From local startup to global success story

Like many of our customers, we began as a startup business. Our founder David Goldman was looking to automate the print estimating and basic accounting processes in his own business. He worked with a team of Newcastle University students to develop software to manage these processes more efficiently.

David realized that other companies might also benefit from this breakthrough and formed Sage in 1981 to begin selling the software.

As desktop PCs became widespread, the Sage line expanded and the business kept growing.

We were first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1989; in 1999, we entered the FTSE 100 and have not left since.

We understand our customers’ needs and the challenges they face. Like them, Sage is an innovator and entrepreneur at heart. Today, we have millions of customers and employ some 13,000 staff across 23 countries, including the UK and Ireland, continental Europe, North America, South Africa, Australia, Asia and Brazil.
