VAT accounting software FAQs

Sage runs a number of HMRC-friendly reports so you have everything important in one place, ready if needed. As well as seeing a running total of VAT for sales and purchases, you can also submit your VAT report with just a click of a button. This takes you through to your password and login to complete your return.

To check a VAT return online, login to your HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) account. This allows you to view your full VAT account, including your VAT returns, and access other online VAT services.

If you want to check whether if a VAT registration number (VRN) is valid, or if you've forgotten yours call the HMRC VAT Helpline, or use the online VAT Information Exchange System (VIES) run by the European Commission.

Thanks to Making Tax Digital, businesses can submit a VAT Return to HMRC every month. This makes things much easier. You will have to submit a final VAT Return if you cancel your VAT registration.

You will need to buy or acquire software that is compatible with HMRC's Making Tax Digital rules. Making Tax Digital for VAT became mandatory for most businesses in the UK in April 2019. From that point HMRC no longer provided online tools for digital submission of VAT Returns. Instead, submissions must be made through commercial software, like Sage Accounting.

Bridging Software helps make sense of more complicated VAT arrangements by taking your spreadsheets and making them comply with HMRC’s new Making Tax Digital rules.

You need to register for VAT online if your turnover is greater than £85k per year. Accounting supports the most common VAT schemes - Standard, Cash-based, Flat Rate, and Flat Rate Cash-based.

Yes. The government implemented a new reduced rate of VAT in 15 July 2020 of 5%. The revised reduced rate of 12.5% is valid from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022. Sage Accounting has an easy-to-use option to process and calculate the new 12.5% reduced rate of VAT when creating sales invoices and recording purchase invoices. Just remember to check the date of your purchasing invoices in order to process the correct rate.
